Hurricane Lowell – Category 2, 105 mph winds

Satellite image taken 3:40 AM HST. As of the 2:00 AM HST advisory, Lowell was centered about 110 miles northwest of Lihue, moving north at 18 mph and pulling away from Kauai. Hurricane conditions continue over Kauai and Niihau, with tropical storm conditions on Oahu. Expect heavy rain (up to 24" possible on Kauai), flash flooding, dangerous surf, and a few tornadoes possible through the overnight hours. Lowell is expected to weaken as it moves north, then curve back toward the west later this week.

Hurricane Lowell (Category 4, 145 mph, 936 mb) and Tropical Storm Karina (65 mph, 988 mb) continue tracking through the Pacific. No coastal warnings are in effect yet, but watches are likely for Kauai County later today as Lowell's track brings it past the islands Monday night. Life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected across Hawaii in the coming days. Stay tuned to local forecasts and monitor official updates.
