This was the design challenge that felt impossible, and how I elevated instead of backing down.

A design challenge scares you when you are doing something that has never been done in a space. But that is half the fun. The client wanted a ballroom turned into a magical forest, and it is my job to deliver, not disappoint.

Anyone can generate a beautiful rendering in 30 seconds. Bringing it to life is a completely different skill. Our average wedding has 20 vendors, and my job is to understand what each one does and direct them all. Draping, lighting, trussing, chandeliers, rentals, floral. Layer by layer, until the ballroom disappeared and the forest was real.

The lesson: an A team of vendor partners is everything. And directing the team is essential for a wedding designer.

And that’s how some of the hardest moments became some of my best work. This is Design SOS.

The ABCs of Event Design:

I is for Intention.

If every detail doesn’t have a purpose, it becomes clutter.

The extra candles. The third centerpiece option. The linen no one asked for. It reads as noise. A room can be crowded and still say nothing.

Intention is the edit.

Every choice earns its place or it leaves. The color pulls the eye. The negative space lets the room breathe. The one striking installation lands because nothing around it competes. Great design is not how much you add, but how you edit.

Clutter is what happens when no one asks why. Intention is when YOU do.

This is the work I teach wedding planners and event designers inside The Lemiga Method by Michelle Gainey. Rooms that mean something, not just rooms that are full.

Confessions of a wedding planner. This was the design challenge that I didn’t want to do, and how I elevated instead of backing down.

Sometimes a client hands you an idea and everything in you wants to say no. A couple asked me for a rainbow wedding, and my honest first thought was, how do I keep this from looking like a birthday party.

So I stopped designing the color and started designing the feeling. They didn’t want rainbow. They wanted joy. Art gallery meets East Atlanta edge. A hand dyed backdrop, a clean white base built for color to pop off of, a full spectrum of color built entirely in the lighting so the room came alive without being washed in it, a hand painted geometric dance floor, and a guest portrait the whole room colored in.

The lesson I never forgot: focus not just on the words a client gives you, but the feeling they are chasing.

And that’s how some of the hardest moments became some of my best work. This is Design SOS.

There’s nothing like watching an event design concept come to life.

The reward isn’t just designing a beautiful space, it’s watching guests actually enjoy it. Move through it. Play in it. Walk away with a story.

We took over a corner of Jackson Park during the The Chosen Few™ DJs Picnic and built an immersive brand activation that carried guests from the roots of Chicago house music, through a portal, into an extraordinary day.

Experiential event design is about making complex ideas feel effortless. So how do you take two concepts that don’t obviously go together like a sci-fi portal and a house music festival, and make it dynamic but simple to follow?

For me it came down to three decisions:

1. Build a flow guests move through in order, so the journey makes sense.
2. Connect the two worlds with a game that sends them from where house began, through the portal.
3. Design it so you don’t need the backstory to enjoy it.

That’s the difference between decorating a space and designing an experience.
