Over the past couple of months, you might have noticed a few new faces helping out at Tailrace.

We've been welcoming students from local Launceston high schools and colleges for week-long work placements across Jude's Cafe, Kids Paradise and Tailrace Centre.

Working alongside our events and kitchen teams, they've had the chance to learn new skills, gain confidence and experience what it's like to be part of a busy hospitality team.

A big thank you to our guests for the kindness, patience and encouragement you've shown these students as they learn.

We love partnering with local schools to give young people a welcoming and supportive place to learn, grow and take their first steps into the workplace.

I love hosting agricultural events! Just look at the fun way they welcome guests to their conference!

How exciting is it to arrive at Tailrace and find a lineup of tractors, trucks and machinery waiting to greet you in the courtyard.

Beyond the impressive machinery, it's the people who make these events so enjoyable to host. There's always an interesting conversation to be had and something new to discover about Tasmania's agricultural industry.

From planning menus to leading the kitchen team and preparing meals for hundreds of guests, Chef Mike plays a big part in bringing our events together.

But there's a lot more to Mike than what happens in the kitchen. So, let's get to know the person behind the chef's jacket!

I asked Mike a few quick questions and this is what he had to say:

Floating in a boat in the sun fishing in a lake

Playing the guitar

We're so excited to welcome Enterprising Aardvark to Tailrace for their 10 Year Anniversary Gala!

For ten years, this volunteer-run organisation has been working to provide free, accessible trauma counselling to people in our community who have experienced sexual, physical and interpersonal violence.

On Saturday 7 November, they're bringing people together to celebrate this milestone, thank those who have supported them along the way and raise funds to continue their important work.

We're grateful to be part of the celebration and would love to see our community get behind them.

One of our favourite things about the Freycinet Room is seeing how differently people use it.

For the 2026 New Horizons Tasmania gala dinner the organisers brought in lighting, created their own stage props, built a giant crocodile head as an entryway, and so much more to transform the room for their Crocodile Dundee theme.

We love providing the space, but it's the creativity of the people who use it that really brings it to life.

Some days we're feeding 300+ people across four different events.

Some days we're out playing golf in the beautiful sunshine.

Ok.. that second one has only happened once. But we had a great time and we're definitely open to doing it again.

The day helped raise funds for Judes Village and the work with young people through school programs, sports chaplaincy and youth groups.
