On this day in 2006, Leon Russell was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame alongside other prolific Oklahoma musicians. His impact in music—not just in Oklahoma, but the world—is understandable when listening to some of his greatest compositions. One of the most well-known, 'A Song for you,' first appeared on his self-titled debut solo album. Singing and playing both piano and tenor horn on the track, the song received massive attention after Donny Hathaway's 1972 rendition. In 2018, the song was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: DONNA MORRIS & ROBIE LONDON

Members of The Church Studio, Donna and Robie, have been best friends for 47 years. If you see one of them at the studio, it’s near-guaranteed you’ll see the other. They’re two peas in a pod—left brain (Donna) and right brain (Robie).

At one point in the 70s, Donna found herself in a limousine with the GAP Band in front of the White House with her husband Bob Morris, who had toured with the band for 9 months. Years later, when the studio was bought by Teresa, Bob and Donna quickly became involved. As members of the studio they could bring along anyone who was curious for free—and naturally, they brought Robie.

“My whole first year that I came here, I was a guest—and then I finally became a member.”

Outside of the studio, Donna gardens, Robie makes ceramics (Donna has her first coffee cup), and they both love to read and thrift. But when asked what they look forward to when they come to the studio, the answer was immediate: the people, the music, and the espresso martinis.

Four days of music and something brand new! Next week’s Tunes @ Noon lineup brings pop, acoustic rock, and bluegrass Americana to The Church Studio, plus the debut of First Spin Friday on October 16!

First Spin Friday is a listening party celebrating a new album, EP, or single, giving audiences a first look at new music in the familiar Tunes @ Noon format. Be part of the very first one and help The Church Studio get this new tradition spinning!

Bring a friend, pick your days, and spend your lunch hour surrounded by music in the historic Live Room. Tunes @ Noon takes place Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday next week, from noon to 1 p.m. at 304 S. Trenton Ave. There’s a lot to look forward to!

One of Leon Russell's many homes, the Aaronson mansion sat in the historic Maple Ridge district. Purchased the same year Leon acquired the studio—1972—the home occupied 2 acres, and was built by Lionel Aaronson in 1919. During Leon's time occupying the home, a recording studio was added in the basement (See blueprints pictured, donated to the archive by John Harkin, Leon's House Studio Engineer.)

On this day in 1977, the house suffered from a fire on its 3rd floor. In later years, Leon decided to sell the home, and it was eventually demolished in 1987 after a years long legal battle with the neighborhood attempting to stop the destruction.

Happy birthday to John Lennon, who would've been 86 on this day. One of music's most impactful figures, his influence in music and pop culture is still felt today. Not only did he fraternize with Tulsa Sound legends Jim Keltner and Jesse Ed Davis, he had Leon Russell play on the 1973 sessions of his album, "Rock 'n' Roll."
