The White Room is located within The Plaza Building, originally constructed in 1888 at 1 King Street. The building first housed The Surprise Store, St. Augustine’s premier department store, celebrated as the “largest and leading department store on Florida’s East Coast.” It served elite guests visiting the Ponce de Leon Hotel, built the same year by Henry Flagler and now home to Flagler College.
In 1936, The Plaza Building was transformed into The Plaza Hotel, and later, from 1949 to 1986, it became the home of Potter’s Wax Museum, one of St. Augustine’s most beloved attractions.
