Visits to Durham VAMC have been opened. The hours are very limited for all organizations.

Michelle DeLaire and Angie Edwards have been appointed as the Durham VAMC Elks National Veterans Service Commission Representative and Deputy after the passing of our very own Terry Rodabaugh.

We would like your assistance in planning and attending special events at the Durham VAMC in conjunction and independently with the great works of our Lodge at the VAMC.

We will be holding a VAMC Visitors meeting at the Lodge Wednesday June 19th at 6:30 PM.

Any members that are helping with the Grand Lodge Events or Lodge's events must complete some forms and be approved by the Durham VAMC before being allowed in the building.

If you have desires to go visit with us, a Volunteer Services form needs to be completed, a small handbook needs to be read and an acknowledgement page signed and sent back to get clearance for all those that wish to attend.

We will have the forms at the meeting and will also leave some on the table near meal sign ups. Please place completed forms in the yellow folder labeled Veteran Volunteer outside the Lodge office bins.

Our Visits will be limited to 5-6 volunteers per visit.

The visitation times are Monday - Friday 10:30 to 11:30 or 1:30-2:30 PM

and Select Weekends and Holidays** 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:30 to 3:00 PM. **Weekend visits are going to be limited due to scheduling of other organizations..

If you are unable to attend and have questions please contact Michelle DeLaire at [email protected] or Angie Edwards [email protected].

We look forward to working with you for the betterment of the lives of our Veterans.

PARTIES- Please note that our tablecloths are reserved for rentals, so if there is an event coming up which you would want to use tablecloth, please check with me first. Last week I had enough tablecloths for the rental Saturday, but found out last minute I didn't have enough because no one checked with me before using them. Please check with me first and early enough that I can make sure we have enough for the rentals.

Big group for our June buddy volunteer date! We took a picture with Shirley Monroe, Child Hunger Programs Manager. Shirley is responsible for receiving and the delivery of needed food to schools within the 7 county system. We also have a relationship with her to provide toiletries to these same locations through the Charitable Trust Grant.
Additionally, I thought it was time for a picture of Felix! He is there every month to help us out when we need new pallets, finishing completed ones, more food, and answering our random questions!

A CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS- Call for volunteers and yard crew. The News and Observer newspaper wants to come out and take pictures of the Flags for Heros going up and people putting them together, so we need some volunteers for that and volunteers to come out and w**d eat in that area and some more places in the yard. More details to come on when they want to come out, probably Friday or Saturday. Lets pitch in and make the property look good for pictures.

HELP FOR A VETERAN-

Urgent Assistance Needed for a Veteran

The WHK committee recently learned of a veteran who is facing a dire situation. This veteran was staying in a hotel near Henderson which, unfortunately, was condemned by the county, leading to him forfeiting prepaid funds. As a result, he finds himself without any place to sleep beyond today, May 20th, and without means to sustain himself until he receives his next disability check on May 24th.
Since the Wake County shelter is closed, we are reaching out to the Elks for support in raising $500 to cover his immediate housing needs this week and prevent him from sleeping outside. A hotel is $110 per night.
If you are willing to help support this veteran, please contact Ryan Hernandez at [email protected] or text him at (919) 283-3124. Contributions can be made via Venmo at https://venmo.com/u/Ryan-Domek-Hernandez or ApplePay.
Your kindness and generosity are greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Joy Young

He will need a minimum of 25 people to sign up by Monday May 20th, he has to order chickens and food for the dinner. LAST CALL FOR FRIDAY DINNER-Deadline by tonight, Thursday. By the Officers. BBQ Chicken Sandwich with Fries and Onion Rings and Dessert $10.00. You can respond back to this email to get signed up.

As a reminder, our meals are cooked by volunteer members and Doe's, and like most of us, have day jobs they work at and then have to shop for the food and then come in to cook, so if only 4 people sign up, it is not worth their time and meals will get cancelled. So if you want a meal on Friday nights, please try to sign up by the Wednesday of that week. You don't have to be present to sign up, you can call the Lodge at 919-787-5990 or respond back to the email that went out.
