Four years later, this wedding still feels so distinctly like Sophia + Raymond.

It was my first wedding back after having Grace, which probably explains why I remember so many of the little details. I made Sophia’s bouquet. Her uncle made the invitations with her on his old printing press. Their ceremony took place outside on the lawn under a hand-carried chuppah, surrounded by the people they loved, followed by dinner and a night of dancing under the tent.

Nothing about the day felt like it was chosen simply because it was what you were “supposed” to do for a wedding.

The color. Raymond’s turquoise jacket. Sophia’s flowers. The setting. The handmade details. Even the way the day itself unfolded. It was personal and intentional without ever feeling overly produced.

And I think that’s what I appreciate even more looking back at it now.

There are so many decisions involved in planning a wedding that it can become very easy to lose yourselves somewhere between the inspiration, expectations and logistics. These two never did.

Their wedding was joyful, relaxed, a little unexpected and completely, unapologetically them.

Four years later, I wouldn’t change anything about it at all.

A colorful wedding doesn’t require every surface to be colorful.

Saribel and Gordon wanted their Brooklyn wedding to feel joyful, personal and unmistakably like them, and there was never a reason to neutralize that personality in the name of making it feel “elevated.”

This design worked because we gave all of that color somewhere to live.

White linens and dinnerware created the foundation. A deep teal runner connected the tables. Brass added warmth against the restaurant’s brick and dark wood. Then the florals carried the brighter pinks, blues, oranges, yellows and purples from the ceremony into the reception.

And some of my favorite choices were the smallest ones, particularly the library-inspired place cards welcoming each guest into “The Next Chapter” of their love story.

That’s the part of wedding design I love: not adding things simply because they’re beautiful, but figuring out how the details, the room and the people can all belong to the same story.

A little Washington, DC for the timeline. 🤍

This wedding is also a good example of a part of our work that doesn’t always get talked about as much: stepping into a wedding that has already been planned and making sure all of those plans actually come together.

With coordination, we aren’t choosing every flower, creating every design detail or making every decision from the beginning. We’re learning the couple’s plans, understanding what they’ve built with their vendor team, identifying the pieces that still need to be connected, and then taking responsibility for bringing it all together when the wedding arrives.

And there was a lot to bring together here, from a beautifully layered reception and long-table dinner to speeches, guest experience, a gelato moment and all of the movement happening around them.

What I love most looking back at these photos, though, is how present they were for it. Sitting together at dinner. Taking in the speeches. Sneaking away for portraits. Actually experiencing the wedding they spent all that time planning.

That’s always the goal.

And I have to say, seeing this gallery again is making me miss our DC weddings just a little 💕.

One of my favorite decisions from this wedding was also one of the ones that initially raised a few eyebrows.

At the Rodin Museum, ceremonies are typically oriented with the gates as the backdrop. We decided to flip it.

Turning the ceremony toward the museum completely changed the experience of the space. Guests approached along the reflecting pool with the museum directly ahead, and the architecture became the backdrop for the ceremony itself. Even the venue team was surprised when we first proposed the orientation, and ultimately loved the result.

From a planning and design perspective, those are the decisions I love most. Not changing something simply for the sake of being different, but looking at a familiar space and asking whether there’s another way to use it that makes more sense for this wedding.

Once we made that decision, the rest of the ceremony design could be beautifully restrained. Garden-inspired florals softened the aisle and framed the couple without competing with the architecture that was already doing so much of the work.

Before the ceremony, they stepped out into the city for portraits, including that SEPTA shot that I love because there’s absolutely no mistaking where this wedding took place. Then it was back into the gardens for a ceremony that gave us a completely different view of a very familiar Philadelphia venue.

This will forever be a DeCourtcey favorite.

There’s something about a February wedding in Philadelphia.

H + A’s day was equal parts romantic, modern and deeply personal, and their first look remains one of my favorite moments from it.

The contrast was so them: Haley in classic ivory, Aman in black brocade, the quiet anticipation before they saw each other, and then that smile the second they did.

Their wedding at The Switch House by Cescaphe was such a beautiful reminder that a wedding doesn’t need to be loud to make an impression. Thoughtful details, incredible architecture, and a day that still felt completely like the two people at the center of it.

Jamaica is beautiful. That part is obvious.

But planning a wedding there takes more than choosing the prettiest venue and booking a flight.
