This past weekend's world premiere performance of Melissa Dunphy's "On th Horizon" was nothing short of magical. With over two years of planning, we have so much to be grateful for!

✨ Our deepest gratitude to the young people of the Commonwealth Youth Choir and Philadelphia Youth Choral Ensembles - your voices, words, and artistry were the heart of this concert, reminding us all of our responsibility to our planet.

✨ Thank you to Melissa Dunphy for your uplifting music that helps us channel both our frustrations and our joy.

✨To our insightful panel - Matt Reese, Alix Davatzes, Melissa, and especially Molly Taylor - thank you for providing the context that deepened our understanding.

✨ We're grateful to our guest performers - Timberdale Brass, percussionists Chris Hanning and Brent Behrenshausen, and our exceptional Ting Ting Wong - your professionalism and artistry elevated our performance.

✨Thank you to artist Jonathan J. Wallacenfor your striking visual creation that perfectly captured the essence of our concert.

✨ Our appreciation goes to the audio engineering team at Weston Sound for preserving this performance for our upcoming commercial release.

✨To the MCP artistic and administrative staff, board of directors, funders, donors, and longtime supporters - your presence and ongoing support make our mission possible.

Finally, to the Mendelssohn Chorus singers - working with you remains one of life's greatest joys. Your commitment to artistry, beauty, and belonging continues to inspire us all. THANK YOU!

Saturday's Spring MCP Alumni & Friends Sing-along was a resounding success! Everyone had a wonderful time reconnecting and creating beautiful music together. It was so great to see many old faces and new ones too! The group sang Vivaldi's "Gloria," the powerful "Va, pensiero" chorus from Verdi's "Nabucco," and selected pieces from Brahms' enchanting "Liebeslieder Waltzes, Op. 52." What a joy to celebrate the season with music and friendship!

For the last two seasons, the artwork for each of our concerts has been created by our very own singers - and we are thrilled to highlight their incredible work!

Jonthan J. Wallace's 2025's "On the Horizon" returns this season with new elements that visualize the complex emotions surrounding our climate crisis. At its center is "The Burning Globe" – a meticulously crafted collage of singed paper pieces cut from abstract watercolors, forming a connected yet fragmented circular shape. Surrounding this centerpiece are words from Melissa Dunphy's libretto, physically altered and written in washable markers – words inspired by conversations with members of the Commonwealth Youth Choir. Pretty darn cool, isn't it?

We hope you'll join us on April 5, 2025 at 4pm for the world premiere of Melissa Dunphy's "On the Horizon" - featuring Mendelssohn Chorus alongside Commonwealth Youth Choir (now part of Philadelphia Youth Choral Ensembles), Timberdale Brass, and percussion

Exciting news! Mendelssohn Chorus is thrilled to share that we've been awarded the Advancement of Music grant from The Presser Foundation! 🎼

General operating support is truly vital for small organizations like ours, and we're incredibly grateful for their continued commitment to our mission.

We are also thrilled to have received support from The Presser Foundation towards deepening our collaborative practices with Commonwealth Youth Choir. This beautiful image, captured by Sharon Torello of Torello Productions, showcases our first collaborative concert with C*C, "We are Waves," from February 2023. And there's more to come! Stay tuned for details about our upcoming collaboration with C*C this April!

Projects like these wouldn't be possible without the generous support of grantmakers like The Presser Foundation. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

This past weekend's concert was nothing short of magical. A HUGE congratulations to our Associate Artistic Director Heather Mitchell who knocked her first full-concert program way out of the park! As one audience member said to me as he was leaving, "This was what we needed right now!" Please enjoy this clip of the incredible women of Mendelssohn Chorus singing "Sound-Bite from Beijing" by Sweet Honey In the Rock.

We simply can't wait for "Never One Thing," curated by Associate Artistic Director Heather Mitchell, on February 22nd at 4pm at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral! Here is what some of our singers are saying about this program:

"One of the most beautiful things about music is that it can express the inexpressible. The music we’re singing in this performance is full of hope and promise, expressed in a variety of styles and genres that will touch many hearts"

"What a FUN repertoire. I'm so excited to sing these pieces (and sing them well) alongside my Mendelssohnians."

"The range of styles that the programming captures - there are grand moments to be shared with an audience both in the soft and loud alike."

"Unlike our other concerts which often have BIG works/heavy works, this concert is a collection of shorter and sometimes more modern works, but in their short duration they express so much and are musically so involved."

Check out this sneak peek of May Erlewine's "Never One Thing" led by Assistant Conductor Ariel Alvarado.
