On May 31, an immersive concert experience at Walt Disney Concert Hall will calm the senses, lower the pulse and surround audiences in breathtaking music inspired by water and nature. It features the works of four renowned choral composers: former Master Chorale Swan Family Artist in Residence Reena Esmail, Marques L. A. Garrett, Hyowon Woo and former Artist in Residence Eric Whitacre.
Esmail’s music weaves together the traditions of Hindustani and Western classical music. Her extensive catalog of orchestral, choral and chamber music is performed regularly across the United States and around the world. Her gorgeous piece, “Malhaar: A Requiem for Water,” is a breathtaking and healing combination of music and visual design that is the centerpiece of Sound Waves, inspired by the climate crisis and ancient Hindustani ragas intended to summon rain.
Garrett – an accomplished composer, conductor, vocalist and educator, and Woo – a leading voice among Korean choral composers working internationally whose work brings together traditional Korean aesthetics and contemporary musical language with a distinctive voice, were commissioned by the Master Chorale to write new pieces that interact with Malhaar, which will both have their world premiere at the concert.
“Water Night” from beloved composer Eric Whitacre will also be performed, evoking a river’s “silent and beautiful current.”
The performance also features internationally acclaimed vocalist Saili Oak and a mesmerizing video installation by Camilla Tassi that will transform Walt Disney Concert Hall into a cocoon of light, motion and sound.
It’s clearly a night not to be missed. Join us! Tickets available at lamasterchorale.org ✨🌊🎶
