In Memoriam: Louis Copt (1949-2025)
We invite you to join us in honoring the life and legacy of Louis Coptābeloved Kansas artist, visionary painter, and passionate advocate for the prairie. Known for his vibrant depictions of the Flint Hills and the iconic spring burns of the tallgrass prairie, Louis captured the spirit of Kansas with unmatched clarity, energy, and reverence.
Born in Emporia, Kansas, Louis Copt dedicated his life to art. His worksāprimarily in oilāexplored the light, movement, and renewal found in the Kansas landscape. A graduate of Emporia State University and student of the Art Students League of New York, Louis returned to Kansas in the 1980s to immerse himself fully in the prairie he loved. His career spanned decades, earning him national recognition, numerous awards, and a lasting place in the hearts of the Midwest art community.
Louisās murals grace public buildings across the state, and his paintings have been exhibited in galleries across the country. He received the Kansas Governorās Artist Award in 2011 and was a mentor to countless artists and students.
This memorial retrospective brings together a curated collection of Louisās most celebrated worksālandscapes that pulse with life, color, and movement. In addition to his iconic oil paintings, the show includes never-before-exhibited sketches, watercolors, sculpture, and personal artifacts from his studio.
