Montrose has some of the best wedding views on the Western Slope, and Storm King Mountain Ranch is one of our favorite proofs of that.

We ran DJ and MC for a reception there recently. Wide-open mountain views, a reception layout that keeps everyone close to the dance floor, and a crowd that was still out there dancing late into the night.

Venues like this do half the work for us — we just keep the energy moving in the right direction all night.

Most of what makes a wedding day run smoothly happens before a single guest shows up.

Kyann's usually the one doing it — walking the timeline one more time with the planner, checking light and layout with the photographer, making sure our Photo Booth is set up where people will actually find it and not tucked in a corner nobody walks past.

It's not the part anyone puts in a highlight reel. It's the part that decides whether the whole evening feels effortless or not.

People assume keeping a dance floor full is about picking "good songs." It's really about reading what's happening in the room, song by song.

Tempo, who just walked off, whether a lull is because people are tired or because the last few songs didn't fit the crowd — that's the actual job. A packed dance floor two hours in rarely happens by accident; it's a string of small corrections nobody in the room notices in the moment.

This is the part of DJing that never makes a highlight reel, but it's most of what we're actually doing out there.

Palisade knows how to host a wedding, and Orchard River View is one of our favorite proofs of that.

We ran DJ and MC for a reception there recently, and the thing that stands out every time is how much a venue's layout shapes the whole night — this one keeps the dance floor close to the action instead of tucking it down a separate hallway somewhere.

Fast songs when the crowd wants fast, a breather when they need one. That's most of what we're actually doing out there.

What's actually happening behind the DJ booth (it's not just picking songs).

Nathan's watching the room the whole night — who's on the floor, who just sat down to catch their breath, whether the energy needs a reset or just needs a slower song to breathe. Song choice is maybe half of it. Knowing when NOT to play the obvious next track is the other half.

It's the part of the job that doesn't show up in a highlight reel, but it's most of what makes a reception feel effortless.

At Firefly the answer is yes. Nathan takes the call, runs the planning, builds the timeline, and works the event. Firefly isn't an agency and there are no substitutions — the person you planned with is the person on the mic.

Nobody asks about the backup gear. It's the least interesting thing on a quote and the most important thing in the van.

Every Firefly wedding goes out with redundant equipment — backup speakers, amplifiers and cables — because a reception has no intermission. There's no window in which somebody drives back to Grand Junction for a replacement.

Since 2014, equipment failure has never stopped one of our shows. That isn't luck. It's a second set of everything, packed before we leave.

A ballroom built in 1893 doesn't behave like a barn.

The Hotel Colorado has been the Grande Dame of Glenwood Springs for well over a century — vaulted ballrooms, vintage chandeliers, and a cobblestone courtyard with a fountain where couples say their vows.

It's also a room full of hard surfaces and reflected sound. We set up for that deliberately rather than turning everything up and hoping, because a historic ballroom deserves sound that matches it.

We worked a wedding in this building in June 2024, and we're on the I-70 corridor to Glenwood often enough that the drive, the load-in and the timeline all get mapped in advance.
