This month's Sip Salon is going to mess with you a little.
Why do we believe things we can't prove? Faith, intuition, gut feelings, scientific consensus, conspiracy theories, all of them ask us to trust something we haven't personally verified.
So what's the actual difference between reasonable trust and blind faith? And how do you know which one you're doing?
Read the articles. Bring your opinions. Drinks encouraged.

Every dog owner has lived this scene:
You know your dog needs a bath. Your dog disagrees. Deeply. Loudly. Physically.
But have you ever actually wondered... why? Why do we bathe dogs at all?

Dogs didn't always live in our houses. They didn't always sleep in our beds. The idea of a "clean" dog is actually a pretty recent invention and the history of how we got here is genuinely fascinating.

Neil Humphrey is coming to The Siposium on June 11 to tell us exactly that story. The Victorian Sanitary Revolution. How it changed dogs. How it changed us. How it created the whole concept of modern pet ownership as we know it.

Bring your dog. They can be confused about it together with you.

We've been running The Siposium for almost two years now and the thing we're most proud of is that every event genuinely surprises people.

Neil Humphrey did that the last time he spoke about dogs, people left talking about their pets differently. Asking different questions. Seeing the relationship in a new way.

He's back on June 11 with more. This time: the Victorian era, the Sanitary Revolution, and how a massive shift in how humans thought about hygiene and bodies fundamentally changed what dogs are to us.

It's dog-friendly, it's at Parsons North Brewing, and I genuinely think it's going to be one of our best nights.

Tickets at the link. Bring your pup.

Our relationship with cleanliness has never been stable.
📅 1890s: Victorian germ panic, people stop shaking hands, foods get individually wrapped, young men shave their beards to avoid harboring bacteria
📅 1950s: Antibiotics and vaccines arrive, death rates from bacterial disease plummet, the obsession fades
📅 1960s: Counterculture decides hygiene is "bourgeois nonsense"
📅 1980s: HIV arrives, everyone gets anxious about bodies and cleanliness again
📅 2020: We're all singing Mr. Brightside while lathering up for 20

Each swing tells us something different about what we fear, what we trust, and how we think about our bodies.
What does this one tell us? That's the conversation.

Fun fact: dogs evolved special eyebrow muscles specifically to communicate better with humans.

Which means your dog’s sad face may literally be evolutionarily engineered manipulation.

At this month’s Siposium, we’re unpacking how humans reshaped dogs during the rise of modern hygiene, cities, and domestic life transforming them from working animals into the couch-sleeping emotional support creatures we know today.

Think:
- weird history
- brewery conversation
- “wait… WHAT?” moments
- at least one golden retriever story

Thursday, June 11. And your pup is invited too.

Obsessive cleanliness may actually be making us sicker.

The "Hygiene Hypothesis" suggests that by removing ourselves from the beneficial microbes we evolved alongside for hundreds of thousands of years, we're depriving our immune systems of the diversity they need to function properly. The result? Immune systems that start attacking things they shouldn't, which may be driving the rise in allergies, asthma, autoimmune conditions, and even anxiety and depression.

Your immune system, it turns out, needs a little dirt.

We're talking about all of this June 2 at Nocterra Brewing.

🐶 Fun fact: before the 19th century, most dogs weren’t considered “family members” at all.

No birthday hats. No dog toothpaste. No $80 orthopedic memory foam beds.

So how did dogs go from workers… to emotional support roommates who sleep under weighted blankets?

This month at The Siposium, we’re exploring the bizarre history of the modern pet dog and how the rise of hygiene culture completely transformed dogs, humans, and everyday life.
