composer/musician/multimedia artist Cecilia Lopez Cecilia Lopez returns with new compositions on 11.03 alongside Filter Four, a fresh quartet of long-time and recent collaborators featuring Ingrid Laubrock Ingrid Laubrock, Trevor Dunn, and Dan Peck .

the group explores the boundary between acoustic and electronic sound. through live amplification and processing, instrumental timbres are altered, twisted, and blended into vivid aural hallucinations, where individual voices lose themselves in a collective network 🌀🎛️.

opening the night, multidisciplinary artist Melissa Almaguer Melissa Almaguer will present a special solo tap performance, expanding into gongs, seed percussion, field recordings, resonant objects, and electronics.

Rest in peace to the great Dolly Parton 🤍🕊️

we’re thinking back to Robert Ashley’s reflections on her powerful a ca****la song “I Am Ready” from The Grass Is Blue. in his lecture The Future of Music, Ashley shares nine songs that were a continued source of inspiration, and writes:

“These are the kinds of things I listen to when I have the feeling that I have lost the vision…I use this as an example of voices without orchestra. Plus it is beautiful. Also as an example of the question of being able to afford it. The reverb, which breaks my heart, probably costs more than I made last year.”

last April, composer/ improviser Wayne Horvitz led a workshop exploring the late composer/cornetist Butch Morris’s musical system, Conduction® – a framework of hand gestures used to structure compositions in real time, typically with improvisers.

as part of the workshop, Horvitz shared this clip from a lecture sponsored by SFJAZZ, reflecting on Morris’s use of Conduction® to create “something he couldn’t achieve with pencil and paper but that sounded sort of compositional.” 👁️watch the full workshop at roulette.org/archive.

all workshops are FREE for members. what’s more, Roulette membership includes discounted tickets year-round, no ticket fees, $2 off at the Roulette bar, free entry to all Awarded Artist performances, and 20% off the online store. ➡️learn more at roulette.org/membership.

just announced! on 10.19, the Marc Ribot Quartet celebrates the forthcoming record, Hurry Red Telephone (out 10.30 via Pi Recordings), with an album release show at Roulette.

the record marks legendary guitarist Marc Ribot’s first instrumental album since 2014’s highly-lauded Live at the Village Vanguard. for this performance, Ribot is joined by an all-star lineup: on drums, Sebastian Steinberg on bass, and on alto sax & guitar. together, they continue the improvisational conversation that began with Ribot and Taylor’s collaboration on the record, while drawing on Ribot’s deep roots in No Wave and free jazz.

the band takes its name from Richard Siken’s poem “Several Tremendous,” which depicts the poet’s efforts to rebuild his ability to write and speak after a stroke robbed him of both—an apt metaphor for Ribot’s pursuit of a language reconstructed from the ground up, and for the quartet’s collective exchange.

🌀here’s a moment from the quartet’s recent performance at Jazz sous les Pommiers, filmed and produced by .
