http://issueprojectroom.org/events

ISSUE Project Room is a pioneering performance center, presenting projects by both emerging and established experimental artists that expand the boundaries of artistic practice and stimulate critical dialogue about art and culture in the broader community. ISSUE plays a vital role in NYC’s cultural ecology, facilitating the commission and premiere of new works and presenting a diverse array of art

ists working across the disciplines of music, sound, dance, performance and literature. Programming places a special focus on bringing recognition to artists whose important contributions to the creative field have been underrecognized, often as a result of gender, sexuality, or geographic location. Through the cultivation of innovative new work, ISSUE performs an essential research and development function that stimulates a constant influx of ideas into the local, national, and international creative landscape.

As part of Celebrating David Behrman this Fall, the organization launches ISSUE Online to share three exclusive recorded conversations in advance of the 2025 Gala honoring Behrman’s legacy of collaboration and technological innovation.

The debut release features a dialogue between pioneering composers David Behrman and Terry Riley, moderated by Tom Welsh. The conversation is also presented in the context of a forthcoming Columbia Recordings box set reissue recognizing Riley’s 90th birthday, with liner notes written by Behrman. After more than 15 years, ISSUE captured the two artists face-to-face for a heartfelt reunion and discussion about their longstanding relationship and work in experimental music.

It is impossible to express how much Robert Wilson will be missed. ISSUE sends our deepest condolences to his extended family of artists, collaborators, partners and friends. We consider ourselves lucky to have been in his orbit and to count him as a member of our Artistic Advisory Council. We love you Bob and we send our thoughts to and to all affected by this loss.

This July, all ISSUE programs are free for Members! Thank you for supporting the organization 🤍

7/1 🏡 Opening the month is a limited engagement for ISSUE Members with Thomas Ankersmit (). The evening consists of an intimate conversation about his artistic practice with the Serge Modular analog synthesizer, his main instrument since 2006.

7/8 🏡 Glory, Glory is a special recording session by composer, poet, and 2021 Artist-In-Residence JJJJJerome Ellis (), joined by longtime collaborator S T A R R busby (). While this event is open to the public, it gives unique access to ISSUE Members and launches the 2025 Summer Membership Campaign. Ellis will transform the limited capacity 22 Boerum Pl. theater into a live recording environment, and invites audiences to participate in an evolving sonic conversation rooted in the Black musical traditions of spirituals and hymns.

7/13 🏡 Later that week, ISSUE hosts LISTENING THROUGH THE FIRE, a free public town hall organized by sound conceptualist & 2009 ISSUE Artist-In-Residence Matana Roberts–the first in a nationwide series of gatherings. Following four nights of sonic conjuring and collective focus at The Stone, Roberts invites participants to gather at the 22 Boerum Pl. theater, not as an audience, but as kindred comrades in dialogue.

𝓢𝓪𝓿𝓮 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓓𝓪𝓽𝓮: ISSUE Project Room is delighted to honor legendary composer and computer music pioneer David Behrman (.david) at our 2025 Gala✨

This year’s Gala recognizes David Behrman’s innovative contributions to electronic and experimental music, his collaborative spirit, and his influence on the integration of technology and live performance. Behrman’s visionary work, and enduring collaborations, place him at the center of an expansive network of ISSUE-affiliated artists. It is in recognition of this profound influence and artistic kinship that we are proud to honor him at the 2025 Gala celebration.

Design inspired by Behrman’s “On the Other Ocean,” Lovely Music, 1978.

Yasunao Tone’s radical approach to sound, media and language shaped generations of artists working across disciplines. ISSUE was honored to present his work over many years, including in 2016 and again in 2023 with AI Deviation, continuing his lifelong inquiry into glitch, chance, and the politics of noise. We will remember him with reverence and gratitude.
