ISSUE Project Room is a pioneering performance center, presenting projects by both emerging and established experimental artists that expand the boundaries of artistic practice and stimulate critical dialogue about art and culture in the broader community. ISSUE plays a vital role in NYC’s cultural ecology, facilitating the commission and premiere of new works and presenting a diverse array of art

ists working across the disciplines of music, sound, dance, performance and literature. Programming places a special focus on bringing recognition to artists whose important contributions to the creative field have been underrecognized, often as a result of gender, sexuality, or geographic location. Through the cultivation of innovative new work, ISSUE performs an essential research and development function that stimulates a constant influx of ideas into the local, national, and international creative landscape.

“It’s a borrowing: we, of this air. wasn’t even mine, and it was only temporary the holding, anyways. In the space of our shared room I breathe in traces of you, you breathe traces of me. In the shade of my small back yard in the city, I recline on a chair on a sickly day and focus on my breathing, which is about all i have energy for. I exhale and the Ailanthus above me reminds me and I try to picture it, breathing me in. i needed a signal or my attention drifts.“

At ISSUE’s 2025 Gala, ISSUE Board Chair, R. Luke DuBois (), announced that he will step down from the role at the end of 2025. We are pleased to announce that the incoming Board Chair is musician & composer Richard Kamerman ().

Richard writes: “…As I look toward ISSUE’s next chapter, regardless of the diminished arts-funding landscape that has come about in the past year, we remain committed to the community and supporting the exploration of emerging practices through our core activities including the residency program, celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. This shift in funding is an opportunity to further innovate in our approach, not just sustaining but expanding a creative vision in service of artists and audiences alike.”

🏡 In recognition of Luke’s contribution, he will be performing alongside 2025 NYU Integrated Design & Media audio lab residents Dani Dobkin and Amir ElSaffar on Tuesday, October 28th at the 22 Boerum Pl. theater. We look forward to gathering with the ISSUE community to thank and celebrate Luke.

David Behrman (.david) is a composer and artist active since the 1960s. Over the years he has made sound and multimedia installations for gallery spaces as well as musical compositions for performance in concerts. Most of his pieces feature flexible structures and the use of technology in personal ways; compositions rely on interactive real-time relationships with imaginative performers. Together with Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier and Gordon Mumma, Behrman founded the Sonic Arts Union in 1966. He had a long association with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company as composer and performer, created music for several of the Company’s repertory pieces, and was a member of the Company’s Music Committee during its last years. Pictures, with its music Interspecies Smalltalk, won the Olivier Award in 1985.

ISSUE Project Room is pleased to announce the selection of Isabella Thorpe-Woods as 2026 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow. Thorpe-Woods is a British curator, producer and interdisciplinary artist with a background in performance studies and journalism.

Thorpe-Woods will present a curated series of events that explore the idea of letters as a curatorial prompt, and the ways they both fail and succeed in transmitting meaning or reaching their desired destination. She asks, "How can we smuggle critical discourse into public conversation through the act of letter writing and performance? How can we write (to/from/for/about/ourselves) home when the political environment makes our immediate surroundings feel paper thin?" Throughout 2026, she will consider how absence, distance and delayed presence might function not as obstacles, but as structure.

As part of Celebrating David Behrman this Fall, the organization launches ISSUE Online to share three exclusive recorded conversations in advance of the 2025 Gala honoring Behrman’s legacy of collaboration and technological innovation.

The debut release features a dialogue between pioneering composers David Behrman and Terry Riley, moderated by Tom Welsh. The conversation is also presented in the context of a forthcoming Columbia Recordings box set reissue recognizing Riley’s 90th birthday, with liner notes written by Behrman. After more than 15 years, ISSUE captured the two artists face-to-face for a heartfelt reunion and discussion about their longstanding relationship and work in experimental music.
