I’ve been deep in dahlia tuber dividing over the last week, and I’ve got about another week’s worth to go before everything is tucked away until March. 🧡
Some flower growers dig their dahlia clumps and store them whole for the winter, waiting until spring to divide. Others divide shortly after digging, like I’m doing this year.
In years past, I’ve always stored my clumps whole and divided in the spring. But as many of you know, I also have a greenhouse where we sell annual flowers, herbs, and veggie starts. It seems like every year, the demand for spring plants starts earlier and earlier with our mild winters, leaving less and less time for dividing dahlias in late winter and early spring.
Not to mention, my dahlia production space has more than doubled over the last few seasons! 🌸
Tuber dividing keeps my hands busy but leaves plenty of room for my mind to wander into 2027 planning. Mostly scheming up how many more dahlias I can squeeze into the field next season (sorry, Mom 😂) and dreaming of holding gorgeous armfuls of blooms like these again.
If you’re interested in growing some dahlias of your own in 2027, I’ll be selling tubers at Green Thumb Garden Supply this spring! I’ll keep you updated as we get closer to planting season. 🧡✨
