August 31 is the international observance of Overdose Awareness Day. From 2023-2025, the number of overdose deaths in Baltimore City decreased more than 40 percent. That is a significant and very encouraging reduction. However, we recognize that the continued overdose crisis in the City requires a sustained, multi-pronged and collaborative response.

Today, we want to recognize two of Baltimore’s leading organizations that are on the front lines of harm reduction work: Pigtown’s SPARC Center, and East Baltimore’s Charm City Care Connection.

Last Friday, OM had the great privilege of hosting a happy hour for SPARC and CCCC after both organizations performed fieldwork in Southwest Baltimore. We not only appreciate their support of OM, but we are profoundly thankful for their service to our community. Their commitment, dedication and advocacy are saving lives throughout the city and giving hope to individuals struggling with addiction.

We encourage you to read more about each organization (links in our bio) to learn how you can volunteer or support their respective missions.

To all of the other individuals and organizations also engaged and working in the fight to prevent overdose-related deaths in the City, we commend and salute you.

And to those in recovery, we applaud your courage and wish you continued healing ♥️

During our most recent jaunt to our hometown of Miami, FL, my sister and I visited one of our favorite spots—our local library! We were pleased to find the Kendall Branch Library looking refreshed yet still familiar. It evoked many wonderful memories of childhood visits and book hauls!

Thanks, Miami-Dade Public Library System, for helping to sow the seeds of my love for reading and writing! Just so you know, your girl went on to become a writer and editor in her career and also open a bar that is named for a literary character, hosts regular literature events, sells books, and was honored by Baltimore Beat for “Best Book Programming”!

Speaking of programming, we have two literature events on Thursday, July 9.

Baltimore Silent Book Club
Bring a book with you from 6:30–8:30 p.m.! There’s no assignment for this club. Bring any reading material and join fellow book lovers for food, drinks, conversation, and a period of reading 📚

Read the Room Open Mic + Write Night!
Also starting at 6:30 p.m. is our writer meetup and open mic. Writers are encouraged to bring a project and recite their work in a safe, nonjudgmental space! Laptops are OK to bring💻

Not into any of that? No sweat—our doors open at 6 p.m. for food and beverage service🍸🍽️

The gorgeous sets of flowers on OM’s bar top are from our amazing friends in the Baltimore Dem. Socialists POC meetup! The group was so thoughtful to present flowers and the most touching card to the OM sisters during their happy hour last week 🥰

Thank you, Baltimore Dem. Socialists, for creating community in our space and for showing us such love. We love you back! ♥️

It’s Smörgåsbord Friday, and we’ve got a slew of activities tonight! Our doors open at 6 p.m. Join us for karaoke, board games, painting and, of course, food and drinks 🍴🍸

After 7 p.m., we’re looking forward to spending the evening with two of our favorite Baltimore action and advocacy groups! The is holding its POC happy hour, and the Baltimore Federal Unionists Network (F.U.N.) is also holding its “heat check” happy hour. Both and Baltimore F.U.N. have wonderful memberships and are looking to grow with those who are in solidarity!

Also this evening, Baltimore-based artist (Mina Monsha) is holding Sounds & Colors, an immersive photo exhibition exploring the interplay between visual tones and auditory emotions.
