Circa 1965 — Greg Bishop (left) and his childhood friend Rob (right), whose dad worked for Col on the dairy farm. The land was still being used for cattle and crops then; the vineyard was just a dream. Col had bought the property twenty years earlier — run down, overgrown, and full of potential. Four years later, restoration would begin on the old convict-built buildings — the first step toward the Coolangatta Estate we know today.

As Greg recalls: “All of my siblings worked hard in those days — boys milking cows and driving tractors, making hay. Rob and Megs worked hard as well.”

Early signs of what’s to come.
These tiny green berries are our grapes just after flowering — what we call “fruit set.” From here, they’ll grow and develop over the next few months before ripening for harvest. Every bunch on the vine started right here — proof that good wine really is made in the vineyard first. 🌿

Perfect rows don’t just happen — they’re decades of trial, timing and a fair bit of Bishop stubbornness. Every vine here was planted with purpose — the spacing, direction and slope all designed to capture the best of our coastal sunlight, encourage airflow through the canopy and keep the vines healthy through wet seasons. It’s that attention to detail — and consistency year after year — that’s helped make us one of the most awarded wineries in the country. 🌿

Winter in the vineyard means one thing: pruning. ✂️

Every single vine across our 25 acres is pruned by hand — no machines, no shortcuts. Why? Because pruning sets the stage for the season ahead. It controls growth, balances the crop, and ensures the vines put their energy into producing the best possible fruit.

Hand-pruning is slow, skilled work, but it’s part of what makes our vineyard unique. It’s a tradition we’ve held onto because it delivers quality you can taste in the glass.

Spot the difference…

On one side, our old vines — thick, twisted trunks that have been producing fruit for decades. On the other, our young vines — carefully trained and protected as they grow into their potential.

Here in the Shoalhaven, the climate makes us more susceptible to disease, so replanting every decade or so is part of vineyard life. But as you can see, both these vines are healthy, happy and flourishing — a blend of heritage and renewal that keeps our vineyard thriving.

How’s this for a Then & Now!

In the first aerial, taken in the 1960s, the original buildings sit in a state of disrepair — overgrown trees and empty paddocks marking decades of neglect before restoration began.
In the second, you can see how nature has changed the landscape over time — the trees taller, the vines thriving, and new additions like the restaurant (once the dairy), Wine Garden, and marquee now part of the Estate’s story.
