In 2019, The Pyree Hall will celebrate 125 years.
This iconic building is a testament to those pioneers who strove to improve themselves, their families and conditions for the future in the South Shoalhaven District.
The hall’s illustrious history dates back to 1894...
In 1894, the local community wanted to build a hall independent of the government and owned and operated by the people.
As a consequence the “Pyree Literary Institute” was formed and the Pyree School of Arts building was constructed on land donated to the Institute by Mr John Hay. Builder, Mr, Joseph Kennedy and Painter, Mr Cordery, were employed to erect the hall.
In 1894 (the first year of operation), The Pyree Hall was used by members of the local community. Activities included, a debate, concert and a ball. A piano was purchased and the following year, a library was established.
An extensive library was set-up with books being originally obtained through the free public library on an exchange basis. By 1908 the shelves were stocked with 284 books and 455 books were issued to readers during 1928.
In the following years gymnasium equipment was purchased for the use of members, lectures by experts on various subjects, including farm management were held at the hall along with new technology demonstrations, competitions and debates. Dances were held fortnightly and the hall was a hive of activity. The drama club and musical society, along with local sporting bodies, The Pyree Cricket and Football Club were regular users of the premises.
In addition, The Institute supported those who left the district to serve their country in various conflicts. Today you will see honour rolls in the hall of those who served in the 2 World Wars and photos of three of the locals who gave their lives.
