"No neighbours, no noise" is the drawcard for Hilltop, a far-flung retreat poised above the Kanimbla Valley on the quieter western side of the Blue Mountains. Among the cabins on the property, this is the most remote – total seclusion is the point. Mid-century furniture, exposed stonework, timber panelling and a toasty fireplace lend the cabin its warm, nostalgic character.

After waking to mist rising through the valley and morning light spilling across the mountains, you might catch sight of three rescue ponies while sipping coffee on the deck. Spend the afternoon stretched out in the hammock or floating in the mineral plunge pool, then soak in the stone bath overlooking the valley as the stars start to fleck the sky.

The Best Holiday Stays Across NSW For Couples

If you’re after a weekend away that makes you forget what day it is, might I suggest a little escape to Mt Kanimbla Retreats? My partner and I recently spent a weekend in the Woodlands cabin, and honestly, it was exactly the kind of slow, secluded getaway we’d been craving.

Tucked away on 36 acres of untouched countryside atop Mt Kanimbla, the retreat feels wonderfully removed from the rest of the world. The views are the real showstopper, stretching out towards the Blue Mountains escarpment and making it very easy to justify spending an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing. The dream!!!!!!

There are several stunning cabins to choose from; we went with the Woodlands cabin. It’s cosy without feeling cramped, luxe without losing that connection to the landscape, and filled with natural materials and soft light that make the whole space feel incredibly calming.

There’s something particularly lovely about how Mt Kanimbla Retreats has approached sustainability, too. The cabins are designed to blend into their surroundings, with rainwater harvesting, solar power, refillable amenities and a real focus on keeping the footprint light. It never feels preachy or like you’re sacrificing comfort for the sake of being eco-friendly, it’s simply woven into the experience.

Set on Dharug and Gundungurra Country, the retreat also feels deeply connected to the land it sits on. There’s a real sense of quiet here that you just don’t get in the city, and after a weekend of fresh air, big skies and very little on the agenda, we left feeling properly reset.

A guest at Hilltop captured the sky exactly as it looks from up here on a clear night, the Milky Way stretched wide above the valley.

It is one of the quiet privileges of staying at the peak of Mt Kanimbla, far from anything that competes with the stars.
This is what we mean by mountain calm.

A gentle reminder from our resident wanderers 🐴

Our rescue ponies roam freely across the property, and while we can't promise you'll cross paths with them, they do love to make an appearance from time to time. If you're lucky enough to spot them, they're wonderfully friendly and always up for a gentle pat. We just ask that you don't feed them, as we care for their diet closely.

Come for the views, stay for the ponies (if they're feeling social).
