Tomoki Tamura joined us for an instore back in March. Off the back of his sold out show the night before Haven - the Northern Rivers crew rolled in and were treated to a set shaped by groove, restraint, decades of digging and the odd cheeky one.
The whole set was peak, though we do need to shout a moment amongst the mix. Deep into his set, Tomoki turned to our back shelves and started digging our inventory.. It took him about 15 seconds to locate a copy of “Dj Rolando - Knights of the Jaguar EP”. He looks around searching for Gaz to check if he can play the record to which Gaz could only nod and grin.
Tomoki’s journey can be traced back to 2004, when he moved from Tokyo to London, gaining residencies in respected clubs in the scene. This helped shape the pathway for underground electronic music between the cities. After nearly a decade of running parties under the moniker Holic, Tomoki launched his label Holic Trax with releases from Mr. G, Tuccillo, Rick Wade, Chris Carrier, Ekkohaus & Rufus, Kate Simko, and Robert Dietz.
The label has since been an outlet for uncompromising, unique and raw takes on house music. Blending deep, dub, minimal with shades of techno and a firm grasp on analog swing. Tomoki in his own right is a talented producer, label owner and promoter. When he gets behind the decks you can truly hear his understanding and vision for what dance music can provide to a space and community.
