Looks like Speed Bump's relatives are on the move!
THE ARMADILLOS HAVE REACHED OHIO
A freshly dead nine-banded armadillo was discovered just four miles east of Oxford, Ohio, after apparently being struck by a vehicle. The specimen was collected and is now at Miami University. That matters because Ohio has had only a handful of previous armadillo reports, many near interstate exits where researchers suspected the animals may have been accidental stowaways.
What makes this discovery especially interesting is that scientists predicted it. A 2025 USGS report tracking the armadillo’s expanding range predicted the species would eventually enter southwestern Ohio from southeastern Indiana. Nine-banded armadillos have been moving north for decades and now have established populations across much of the Midwest. This specimen was found almost exactly where researchers expected them to arrive.
One armadillo doesn’t prove Ohio has an established population, but a preserved specimen provides physical evidence that can be verified and studied. Researchers are already receiving reports of additional armadillos around Ohio. If those sightings continue, especially if breeding is documented, we could be watching a new mammal naturally expand into the Buckeye State.
