Gallery5 is a 501(c)3 Non-profit Organization that facilitates and inspires creativity while preserving and celebrating Richmond history. G5 is an award-winning, community-motivated visual and performing art center and museum

that has become a premier arts venue for local and regional audiences. Through extensive collaboration with cultural, educational, environmental and social organizations, we continue to broaden demographics by encouraging a more diverse, inclusive, and inspired region of art supporters. We showcase forward thinking contemporary art exhibitions in our historic space and museum that are designed to further innovation in our region and encourage dialogue among artists and audiences. Our exhibitions range from themed solo or group shows, international notables, local favorites and emerging unknowns whose works deserve more public exposure. Through the development of annual fundraisers, exhibitions and unique marketing campaigns, we utilize artistic talents to inspire positive social and economic change and awareness. Gallery5 is one of the top venues in the region for unconventional and progressive performance art series and is host to weekly visiting arts groups. These performances consist of local and nationally known artists in areas of improvisation comedy, spoken word, film, live music, contemporary dance and theater. With your support we continue to be a catalyst for new creative initiatives, and serve as a launching pad for emerging artists and area non-profits. We exist to preserve and make available our historic building as a museum and to provide our community with a space to share their innovations and to engage others. History:
Gallery5 is located in Richmond, Virginia’s, Historic Jackson Ward district. The Gallery opened its doors on April 15, 2005 as a museum, art, and performance space in an effort to save the life of a National Historic Landmark known as Steamer Company No. 5. Built in 1849, Steamer Company No. 5, is Virginia’s oldest firehouse and Richmond’s oldest police station and jailhouse. This landmark has survived threats of demolition by the City of Richmond for over 3 decades. Without the dedication of volunteers over the past 35 years, an important piece of our city’s history would have been lost. The downtown arts community has grown exponentially since Gallery5 became an anchor destination, attracting other museums, galleries and businesses to the area. Gallery5 is very proud of its contribution to the revitalization of the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood, and to the many artists and arts organizations that call the area home. Gallery5 is paving the way for positive community change through numerous campaigns, educational workshops, public arts collectives and grassroot collaborations. Gallery5 has received many notable recognitions and awards over the years. Some of our awards include:
- “Arts Innovator of the Year” 2008 Theresa Pollock Award for Excellence in the Arts
-”Best Underground Venue for Music and Arts” Style Weekly’s 2011 Best of Richmond Awards
“Best Gallery in which to see Richmond Artists” Richmond Magazine’s 2011 Best & Worst of Richmond
-“Best Art Gallery” in Richmond Magazine’s 2007 Best & Worst of Richmond Awards.
-“Rising Star” Finalist in the Virginian’s for the Arts: Art’s Builds Community Awards.

Join us for Community Care Night on May 1 where we will open up the space for an engaging discussion about Richmond’s live music scene. Attendees will have the chance to ask local venue representatives the questions that matter most.

Ever wondered why ticket prices fluctuate, how venues choose which artists to book, or what goes into making your favorite local shows happen? This is your opportunity to hear directly from the people behind Richmond’s independent venues and get insights into the local concert experience.

We’ll be collecting questions ahead of time through a poll on our story and at the door to help shape the discussion. Whether you’re a dedicated show-goer, a curious newcomer, or someone passionate about Richmond’s music culture, we invite you to come listen, learn, and engage. Let’s build a stronger, more connected music community together!

🎤: The event will be moderated by local music photographer and WRIR board member .unofficial

Gallery5 is now accepting submissions for Q***r Joy, opening First Friday, August 1st 2025.

“Unprecedented times” is the phrase we hear so often these days. We hear it amidst the rise of discriminatory practices, hateful language, and state-sanctioned prejudice. These are real concerns, affecting real lives, including (but not limited to) q***r lives. We also see both q***r and non-q***r individuals rising against these types of actions. Risking very real consequences to say “this is not right” and “this is not the society we want to live in.” We are inspired by these persons, motivated by them, and humbled by them.

And yet, we wonder – what role does q***r joy play in this resistance? What role does q***r joy play in dreaming of a different future than the reality we currently know? And also – can we just F-ing celebrate q***r joy sometimes?? In a day and age as fraught as this one, Gallery5 wants to provide space with this exhibition to be bold, bright, brash, and beautiful; to celebrate q***r identity, authenticity, and self-hood. We want to welcome and accept q***r individuals, because of the beauty, power, and generative energy that is the q***r community in Richmond.

Another way to say this is that like all groups marginalized by those in power, q***r identities are not simply defined by their struggles. They are also defined by how they choose to define themselves, including their joy in their identities and lives. We believe that joy is integral to resilience and bright futures - of q***r individuals, and of the communities that include them. Resilience is nothing without the ability to revel in what it means to be who we are as humans – and in this case, q***r humans.

We invite submissions of artwork for this exhibition that respond to these ideas – to the concept of “q***r joy” and thoughts about how it functions in society and in q***r communities, as well as celebrations of it and explorations related to it.
