The Frankie G. Weems Gallery at Meredith College features the exhibition “Stilhet” by the artist Jean Gray Mohs. Jean Gray’s practice considers the body as material, landscape, and a site of continual change where it is simultaneously structured and vulnerable. Rooted in her lived experience with chronic illness and organ transplantation, Jean Gray builds tension between contrasting ideas: play and risk, structure and surrender, rawness and refinement, and she invites us into this play of contradictions.

Engaging the relationships between architecture and anatomy, Jean Gray utilizes wood, metal, and thread. She cuts apart, reconfigures, stitches, binds, balances, and smooths her materials, leaving visible traces of their previous forms. Her practice moves seamlessly through traditions of craft, storytelling, and making by hand.

“Stilhet” will take place October 08 – October 30, 2026 at Frankie G. Weems Gallery in the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center on the Meredith College Campus. The gallery is open weekdays 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. The opening reception will be held on October 15, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery. The gallery talk will take place in room 137 in the Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center at 5:30 pm. Meredith College is located at 3800 Hillsborough St. in Raleigh, North Carolina.

College Raptor has named Meredith College North Carolina’s Hidden Gem and #14 in the Southeast U.S.

The recognition is based on retention rates, graduation rates, student-to-faculty ratio, endowment per student, and selectivity.

A perfect example of Meredith students Going Strong!

history students contributed to the successful approval of a North Carolina Highway Historical Marker honoring NASA pioneer Virginia Layden Tucker. The new marker was approved on December 16, 2025, and will be unveiled on October 5.

On October 5 at 10am, all staff, faculty, students, alumni, and community members are invited to attend a special dedication ceremony focused on a new historical marker in honor of Virginia Tucker. Tucker was a North Carolina College for Women (NCCW, now UNC Greensboro) graduate whose pioneering work in aeronautics and mechanical engineering paved a path for women in STEM fields. Through her work for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA, now NASA) to her research at Northrop Aviation Corporation to her involvement with the Society of Women Engineers, Tucker used her NCCW education to become a trailblazer in aviation research.

Thanks to research conducted by Meredith College history students, Tucker (Class of 1930) will be honored with a roadside marker through the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker program. Professor of History Dan Fountain’s Spring 2025 “Meredith College History” class worked with Professor of History Angela Robbins and UNCG University Archivist Erin Lawrimore to develop the proposal. The marker will be placed on Market Street near the UNCG campus entrance.

On Monday, October 5 at 10am, a dedication ceremony will take place at the School of Music Building’s Organ Hall (100 McIver Street). The event will feature a talk about Tucker’s life and work as well as recognition of the students whose work helped make the marker possible. A reception will be held in the Organ Hall Atrium, where visitors can see an historical exhibit of material related to Tucker as well as other UNCG women in the science, technology, and mathematics fields. No RSVP is necessary.
