Five Ten was born out of the hearts and minds of renowned Oakland musicians: Keyboardist, Composer Steve Carter, multi-Percussionist Marquinho Brasil, and Dennis Smith, Bass Guitarist, Composer. Together with internationally known and Grammy nominated Jeff Narell on steel pans, and Santana alumnus Billy Johnson on drums, Five Ten is a musical explosion that soothes, excites and electrifies.

Five Ten is a San Francisco Bay Area World Jazz group consisting of five longtime friends and international players. The group is Master Keyboardist Composer Steve Carter, Bass Guitarist/Composer Dennis Smith, Multi-Percussionist/Composer Marquinho Brasil, Grammy-nominated Jeff Narell on Steel Pans, together with Santana and Frankie Beverly and Maze Alumnus, Billy “Shoes” Johnson on drums. Five Ten are seasoned, internationally renowned musicians each with his own impressive legacy of performances and shared stages.
Versatile and talented, Five Ten blends rhythms, cultures, and traditions from all over the world. Their latest CD entitled “New World” is a hypnotic fusion of urban street grooves with Brazilian and Caribbean flavors infused with hints of African rhythms resulting in a genre-defying, exciting, pulsating musical experience.
Keyboard player Steve Carter has performed or recorded with Sheila E., Bobby Womack, Michael Franti, Jay Lane, Tom Scott, Samba Ngo, Taj Mahal, Pete Escovedo, The Headhunters, Love and Rockets, Bill Summers, Ray Obiedo, Don Cherry, Benny Rietveld, Will Kennedy, George Benson, Mickey Hart, Malo, Sapo, Billy Cobham, Charo, John Faddis, Los Mocosos, and many more. Steve is a versatile multi-keyboardist who is at home in a wide variety of styles.
Bassist Dennis Smith has recorded and toured extensively with Melvin Seals and JGB and Melvin Seals’ Melting Pot. He’s also recorded and toured with international artists Samba Ngo (Congolese), Ze Manel (Guinea-Bissau/Portugal) and Henri-Pierre Koubaka (Senegal). He has performed with The Avalon All-Stars featuring Napoleon Murphy-Brock and Ike Willis (Frank Zappa and Mothers of Invention), Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), Tal Morris and Wil Bernard.
Jeff Narell is an internationally known steel panist, Afro-Caribbean percussionist and educator-clinician who has dedicated his life to promoting the artform and expanding the musical range of the steel pan.
He studied in the 1960’s with Ellie Mannette, the principle inventor of the modern steel drum.
Jeff’s original composition “Ellie Man” was a top tune played by steel orchestras island-wide for Trinidad Carnival 2003. A tribute to his mentor, it was sung and recorded in collaboration with Trinidad calypso star “Crazy” and performed by Ellie’s original steel orchestra, “Invaders”, at Panorama. Selected by steel orchestras in five countries as their tune of choice.
Drummer Billy Johnson born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While living in Philly, he worked with Patti Labelle, Noel Pointer, and producer Dexter Wansel.
Working with Dexter Wansel provided the opportunity to record with Donny Hathaway playing drums on Donny’s song “You Were Meant for Me“.
Billy moved to the Bay Area in 1980 joining Maze, featuring Frankie Beverly. From there, Billy went on to work with Santana, MC Hammer, George Howard, and Joyce Cooling.
Percussionist Marquinho Brasil was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His talent led him to perform with such Brazilian stars as Martinho da Vila and Joao Nogueira. He moved to the U.S. in 1982 to join an acclaimed Brazilian dance troupe, Batucaje. Classical. Brazilian. R&B. Jazz. Afro-Cuban. Popular Rock and Roll. Ed Johnson’s mastery of so many different styles, coupled with a passion for harmony vocal and horn arrangements, all factor into a magical blend of vibrant, original contemporary jazz that is winning fans and airplay worldwide.

As a vocalist, Ed Johnson is frequently compared to Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Kenny Rankin, and Michael Franks. As a guitarist and bandleader, critics often cite the lushly exotic, accessible sounds of Airto and Flora Purim. Ed has seven recording projects to his credit, in addition to producer’s credits for other singer/songwriters.

The Mallet Band is a group of percussionists dedicated to combining pitch and rhythm into something much more than a primal caveman celebration. (Although we do like caveman celebrations…) We literally strike the instruments with mallets in order to create music that resonates through several ethnic idioms, Latin, Jazz, Brazilian, African, Jamaican.
