Getting into the video production industry was hard for me. It felt like everyone who had already made it in was trying their best to keep others out. Resources were hard to come across and most of my knowledge I gained was from trial and error.
I never knew how many easy ways there were to get experience with a camera that didn’t involve recording random things on vacation. Styled shoots are one of best I’ve found and here’s why:
1: You get to network with other people already in your industry. This is one of your best resources for learning. Find out what is working for them and discuss possible future collabs. All of my best connects have been made in person.
2: Stress free. Styled shoots are meant to be a “mock up” of a real event but without any real paying clients. Everyone who attends these are business owners in some capacity. You don’t have to worry about client satisfaction and interaction nearly as much.
3: Preferred vendors and references. A lot of business have a list of people/companies they like to work with. This is a great time to get on a few or start your own. Create a good experience for them and there is a good chance you will get some referrals or future work out of it.
I plan on creating a series of posts showing the part of videography most people don’t talk about. Where that be behind the scenes or how-to’s.
