HAPPY FRIDAY! 🤍

Sharing a little bouquet dump from last summer’s subscription season because these photos make me so excited for what’s coming again!

Some of these are still my favorite bouquets I’ve ever made and I just can’t wait for the joy that surrounds growing, creating, and sharing these beautiful blooms.

We’ve been up to our eyeballs in farm tasks and prepping for the summer season over here too. Joe’s working on getting our field ready by tilling beds, laying landscape fabric & drip line, and spreading cover crop seed on field areas that we rotate while the kids & I tend to the thousands of baby plants in the greenhouse. They are very much at the “please plant me already” stage 😅 It won’t be long now before everything starts taking off again.

Things are starting to feel alive around here and it’s the best feeling! ☀️

Brighter days are ahead! ✨

Can’t wait for peony season; it’s just shy of a month away & these plants are on year 3, which means they will finally be ready for the picking! 🤍

Peonies are definitely an investment and a lesson in patience- flower farmers typically wait about 3 years before harvesting as those early seasons are all about building strong roots, not blooms. Cutting from them too soon can weaken the plant and impact future flowers (although sometimes I can’t help snagging a few!). It’s a real investment of time and care with no immediate return, but once they’re established, they reward you with big, beautiful blooms year after year… proof that some of the best things are worth the wait.

Each season brings its own lessons; some we welcome with open arms, and some that really test our faith (emphasis on the ‘really’!!). This is one of those seasons where I’m being reminded that even when we do everything right, when we do everything we can, the outcome is still ultimately in the Lord’s hands. When we’re asked to surrender, we must do just that.

This spring, we were expecting our biggest and most beautiful tulip season yet. We planted our tulips last fall following the same careful and intentional practices & methods we use here on our farm season after season— ones that have given us dang near perfect results over the years. Over the last month, it became increasingly clear that this season was going to look very different.

We’ve experienced a significant loss across the majority of our varieties, both in our greenhouse and in our field. While a small number of tulips have come up, it’s nowhere near enough to sustain a full season. This loss is tremendous and I’m still in shock while I write this out to share with you all.

After digging, checking, working to understand what’s going on, and connecting with our supplier, it’s clear that this year’s bulb quality was impacted by factors completely out of our control as growers.

This has been gutting. We poured so much into this season and to see it turn out this way is not something I have words for.

Farming can be downright cruel at times. This spring I’m being asked to surrender. I’m choosing to lean into my faith more than ever and trusting that there is a purpose in this, even if I can’t fully see it yet. Now the work becomes figuring out how we pivot & move forward.

Thank you for being here, for supporting our tiny farm, and rooting for us season after season, especially through the hard and unpredictable parts that simply are farming. We are praying reverently for redemptive seasons ahead.

And most importantly— it’s all about perspective!
We have food in our bellies, a warm & safe roof over our heads, and very happy, healthy babies. I would choose our problems over and over and over again.

There’s something really special about growing something people believe in before they even see it.

We’re less than a month out from tulip season, and behind the scenes we’re in full prep mode.. ordering and restocking supplies, turning our cooler over and making the switch from storing dahlia tubers to filling that space with crates and crates of thousands of tulips that will be harvested in the coming weeks.

We’re out walking the rows every day, watching them grow, waiting for those first blooms to show themselves. Jack, our son, is officially on tulip watch and is usually the first one out the door to check on them 😅

Every tulip has been planted by hand, months ago, in the quiet of fall. It’s a season of trusting that what’s beneath the surface is growing exactly as it should.

And in a lot of ways, that’s what it means to be a subscriber too.

Before you even see a bloom, you’re saying yes to our flowers. You’re trusting us- our hands, our process, our crops before you ever hold a bouquet. And that kind of support isn’t lost on us. It’s incredibly meaningful.

We’re heading into this season prayerfully, hopeful it will be our fullest yet.. not just in blooms, but in the community surrounding us.

I’ve had a few hundred new faces show up here lately, which feels really special *especially* since I haven’t been posting a ton this year. (Ope, sorry!! 🥲) I figured it was probably time for a proper introduction (or reintroduction) so you can get to know your farmer a bit 🤍

So hi— I’m Maggie!
I’m the flower farmer behind Lily Bee Collective.

My husband Joe (the muscle + voice of reason) and I are the fifth generation to put down, plant roots, and tend to this land on his family’s original homestead here in our hometown.

We’re raising four kids in the middle of it all
— which means there’s usually someone picking flowers they definitely weren’t supposed to, someone tagging along with a bucket twice their size, someone needing a snack immediately *OR ELSE*, and always always always a baby along for the ride in whatever season we’re in.

This whole thing started as a tiny backyard garden with a few flowers mixed in as a coping mechanism for me while working as a RN during the pandemic, and somehow it’s grown into what it is today. And truthfully, it’s still being shaped and grown. As our family grows, this farm does too. It shifts, it stretches, it becomes something new in each season & I’ve come to really love that about it!

I’ve always had a pull toward simple, handmade, homegrown things, whether that’s out in the field, in the garden, or in my kitchen on one of my many little hobby tangents (lately it’s been bread 😅). And this farm has slowly become a place where all of that gets to live together. Truly the biggest blessing!!

What started with flowers is turning into more of a gathering place with the growth of our farm-stand: The Bee’s Farmacy. It’s home to seasonal bouquets, and little bits of what we’re growing, baking, and sourcing locally along the way. Nothing fancy, just good, honest, local things.

At the end of the day, this has never just been about flowers.

It’s about building a life close to home.
It’s about working with our hands & nurturing the land that’s been passed down before us.
It’s about raising our kids in the middle of something meaningful.

Whether you’re an OG following since the beginning or just recently found us— we’re really glad you’re here.
