WORKSHOP โ€“ Celestial Navigation with Nick Brooke
On Saturday, July 26, 2025, Harvestworks is proud to present a special outdoor workshop with composer and installation artist Nick Brooke, who will lead participants through an immersive, hands-on experience in celestial navigation.

Presented in conjunction with his sound installation Extant, part of the exhibition Time-Based Art: Space and Time in Tune, this event takes place during nautical twilight, the ideal time when both the horizon and stars are visible. Participants will learn to use a sextant, the classic tool of ocean navigation, to locate their position using only the night sky.

Brooke, known for combining music, theater, and experimental technologies, brings a poetic and performative dimension to this centuries-old practice. The event includes a brief walk to the western shore of Governors Island for star sightings and horizon measurements, turning a historic method of orientation into a shared, site-specific experience of sound, sky, and sea.

Refreshments will be served.

LIVE PERFORMANCE โ€“ Sour Mash (Yo Vinyl Richie 2025 VIP Edit)

On Saturday, July 19, 2025, Harvestworks is proud to present a special live performance by current artist-in-residence Yo Vinyl Richie, who will reinterpret Sour Mash, the acclaimed collaborative audio work by George Lewis and Marina Rosenfeld. Developed during their Harvestworks residency, Sour Mash was originally composed for vinyl, with each artist contributing one side of the LP. Designed to be played solo or in tandem, the work creates a third, emergent piece through layered playbackโ€”blurring the boundaries between composition, improvisation, and media art.

Yo Vinyl Richie brings his distinctive turntablist approach to this dynamic material, treating the record as both score and instrument. His performance will explore the workโ€™s open structure, engaging in real-time remixing, manipulation, and sonic dialogue with the original recordings.

Presented as part of Harvestworksโ€™ summer program on Governors Island, this event invites audiences to experience Sour Mash as a living, evolving sound work that extends improvisation into the hands of the end user.

***THIS SATURDAY***

Sonic Flotsam by Hans Tammen with special guest Johannes S. Sistermanns

Harvestworks Art and Technology Program presents Hans Tammenโ€™s Sonic Flotsam with special guest Johannes S. Sistermanns in the exhibition Time-Based Art: Space and Time in Tune. Taking off from Pauline Oliverosโ€™ Apple Box approach, a suitcase (usually found in the city the piece is performed in) acts as the instrument. Together with its contact microphones it functions as a filter and amplifier for the sounds coaxed from its resonant body. For the performance on Governors Island the project will be augmented by Johannes S. Sistermanns activation of the interior and walls of the performance space.
