Was I technically “upstaging Dolly”? I’ll let you be the judge.

What I can confirm is that I was having the time of my life, Dolly looked fabulous, and somehow I left the set with enough keepsakes to prove this whole thing actually happened.

Still one of my favorite stories to tell.

As a young gay man, I looked up to Dolly Parton in a BIG way. Her confidence, her boldness, and her ability to be completely herself made quite an impression on me.

So imagine my excitement when I ended up as an extra on Dolly Parton Down in New Orleans… only to be told I was “upstaging Dolly.”

Which, honestly, if you’re going to be accused of upstaging anyone, Dolly feels like a pretty good choice.

She was always someone I admired for knowing exactly who she was and never being afraid to turn it up a little. Clearly, I took notes.

As a young gay man, I idolized Dolly Parton in a BIG way. Her confidence, her boldness, and her ability to be completely herself made quite an impression on me.
