Garden Ceremony — Locusts on Hudson, Upstate NY

One of our favorite things about a beautiful private estate?

Letting the wedding feel like it belongs there.

For this destination wedding weekend at Locusts on Hudson, we didn’t want the ceremony to feel disconnected from the landscape. The mature trees, garden and planted elements became part of the visual story.

That’s something we think about constantly when designing for our clients:

Does this feel like them?
Does it feel like the property?
Does it feel natural and authentic here?

When those four answers are yes, the design usually doesn’t need to shout.

And yes… as the “tree huggers” that we are, we’ll take a ceremony beneath a magnificent tree any day. 😊🌳

POV: Your ballroom is full… but you still need somewhere to dance. 💃🏾

For this Jasna Polana wedding, dinner completely filled the ballroom, so we took the band and party outside.

Clear-top tent. Illuminated landscape. Glowing spheres around the property and floating on the pool. ✨

Pretty? Absolutely.

But the lighting wasn’t there just to look good. Guests needed to see, we wanted to preserve the views of the architecture and pool, and we didn’t want the solution to require a massive exterior lighting production.

Function + beauty. Always.

And with that, we’re closing out our little conversation about The Art of Light the same way we approach so much of our work:

Beautiful floral arrangement can disappear on your tablescape if it’s not illuminated.

You can spend thousands on beautiful flowers… and they “disappear” in a dark ballroom.

Lighting and floral design should never be completely separate conversations.

Flowers react to light.

Glass reacts to light.

Water reacts to light.

Candles react to light.

Even the texture of linen can appear to change.

Some elements create the composition.

The other allows you to bring it into focus. 💡

Sometimes we’re not lighting a room at all.

We’re lighting the landscape.

For outdoor celebrations, we think about trees, pathways and architectural elements almost the same way we think about walls inside a ballroom.

What parts of the property disappear after sunset?

Where do guests need visual direction?

And which natural elements deserve to become part of the environmental design?

A tree that might disappear completely at night can become one of the most beautiful elements on the property with thoughtful illumination.

At AVS Events, we are know to bring nature in to become part of the décor. 😊 💫

Cocktails at Angel Orensanz.

One of my favorite things about lighting is its ability to let guests experience different personalities within the same building.

The ceremony can feel dramatic and architectural.

Then guests move upstairs and suddenly the same historic space feels intimate, atmospheric and almost mysterious.

We used draping, candlelight and cool-toned illumination to create that transition without fighting the extraordinary architecture already around us.

We don’t always aim to transform a venue into something else.

Sometimes we design to showcase what’s already there differently.

This is why as event designers, we need photographs with people in them too.

We can vividly remember watching this family’s reaction to a dance performance of one of the most famous South Asian / Indian dance groups they hired for this spectacular engagement celebration with over 1,000 guests.

The people become the story. After all, isn’t that the reason we work so hard to design the most fabulous spaces for the most fabulous experiences?!
