Hi Friends!

On Saturday, January 31st, I am setting out on a backcountry skiing fundraiser: The Camel’s Hump Challenge. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and funds for the Vermont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

My team is named “Team Sloatman.” to honor the memory of my mom, Roberta, who had a long term battle with dementia. And also to honor her siblings who are facing their own challenges with dementia. In a wider scope, it’s also to honor the many other friends and family who are dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia, both directly and indirectly.

I will be skiing on the beautiful backcountry ski trails that circumnavigate Camel’s Hump in northern Vermont, which is a perfect event to honor my mom and her family as they were outdoor enthusiasts, and my mom, in particular, loved to ski.
As a first timer, I am excited and a little nervous since it’s a full day of unassisted skiing on some remote trails. I’ll be skiing with my nephew, Cal Hale, and my Cousin David Sloatman. I’ve been skiing for many years with them both, and I am proud to say that I think I had a hand in turning Cal into a ski enthusiast!

As a team, we are hoping to raise funds for the Vermont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and would be grateful for any size contributions to the link below. The Alzheimer’s Association is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization so your donations are tax deductible.

Please reach out of you have any questions, and thanks in advance!

The Alzheimer's Association leads the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.

What are you doing Saturday October 25th or November 1st? If you’re in VT, stop by the Reading Greenhouse for their annual Arts and Crafts fair from 10-4 each day. It’s only a 23 minute drive from Ludlow and the foliage is still popping!! There will be some great artists of all different types to check out and purchase their work. Also some great food (including ) and live music. I’ll be there tomorrow. As I was setting up this afternoon I got the chance to take a sneak peek at some of the other artisans work and it’s all very impressive. This is a great way to wrap up the fall foliage season get a jump on holiday shopping and support your local artists! See you tomorrow!

I like old stuff and I cannot lie: Old skis and old cameras to name just a few.

I was admiring some vintage skis for sale in a shop this winter, and thought it would be fun to shoot with some of the old skis I’ve collected. They range in age from old wooden skis with screw in edges, to the iconic red white and blue K2 Fours from the early 70’s (and no, they aren’t for sale…!).

It’s been a while since I’ve shot with film, and used my dad’s old Canon AE-1 and a Ricohflex medium format. I had forgotten the excitement and anticipation of waiting to get your film processed.
I will have some prints available soon, and hope to showcase a few this Sunday at opening weekend of the Ludlow Farmers Market this from 9-1 on Depot Street.

Natures wrath can be beautiful, but also a real nuisance!. Some of my favorites from the Kingdom of Ice we endured through yesterday. Thanks to all the utility workers and road crews toiling to get things back to normal!

Last night I was pretty bummed because I was seeing all the amazing pics of the Aurora Borealis, but here we got skunked due to the heavy cloud cover so I couldn’t get any decent pics. Woke up early and thought I’d give it a shot and take a short walk down to the lake. Glad I did! The colors were beautiful and the hint of blue sky breaking at dawn was a nice bonus. Enjoy!

While out for my morning walk with the pups, we encountered a group of tree huggers: a very big Mama Bear and her 3 cubs! Even though the dogs were trying to act tough, we turned around quickly. I returned with my real camera and my zoom lens so I could shoot from a safe and non-interfering distance. Big Mama was on alert, and so was I…!

My Chief Quality Inspectors checking the reclaimed barn board I use to make the frames for my photos. These particular boards are from an old barn in Charlotte and have lots of character (and old square nails!). This weekend is the Vermont Crafts Council Open Studio weekend. I will be at my gallery from 10am to 5pm on Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th, Located at 2 Lamere Square in Ludlow. I’ll have some special deals on all prints (framed and unframed).
