THE FACE OF THE PACHUCO BALL
When Pachucos and Pachucas TOOK their place in American culture, they were known for their distinctive style. Pachucos wore zoot suits—baggy pants, long coats, and wide-brimmed hats—their outfits were accessorized with chains and sharp, polished shoes. Their fashion was bold; it was a symbol of rebellion, cultural pride, and resistance against mainstream norms - all of this against a backdrop, and during a time, of intense racial discrimination against Mexican-Americans. The Pachuco stood as a symbol of defiance, forging a new, proud identity during a time of intense racial discrimination, social, and cultural tension.

Well, look around you today - almost a century later. What do you see? The same old song, different year. This one's for our youngsters. Teach them that they can hold their heads high and walk in pride and dignity, because they can! Tell them to never let anyone look down on them because of their heritage or the color of their skin. Tell them to never forget where they came from or who came before them. It's your story. The silver lining? The beautiful young people at the table, giving of their gifts and abilities. Young, dynamic, beautiful. They are our legacy as a people. They are the face of the Pachuco Ball.

¡Muchísimas gracias!

THIS IS FOR OUR KIDS - THE CALLE CULTURA COMMUNITY EDUCATION FORUM
