I don’t know when birthday parties turned into full-blown production schedules… but I’m starting to miss the 90s version.
You know the one—pizza, a backyard, maybe a trampoline if you were lucky. No stress, no 10-stop Target run an hour before the party because you forgot to grab a gift.
Lately, some parents at my kid’s school have been doing something that honestly feels like a throwback to simpler times. On the invite, they’ll say:
“No need to bring a gift, but if you’d like, [child’s name] would love $7 for their 7th birthday.”
And I’ve gotta say… every parent I know had the same reaction: relief.
Because let’s be real—between gifts from us, grandparents, and then 10–15 kids showing up with presents… it gets excessive, fast. Half the stuff ends up forgotten in a week anyway.
This way, it’s simple. Everyone chips in a few bucks, the kid picks out something they actually want, and there’s way less clutter piling up at home.
But the best part? It puts the focus back where it used to be—on the experience.
The games. Running around with friends. Cake and chaos. The stuff they’ll actually remember. Maybe even an arcade basketball hoop trailer rental haha shameless plug)!
Not the pile of unopened toys in the corner.
Honestly, it feels like we’re getting back to what birthdays used to be about—and making them easier on everyone in the process.
And yeah… bonus points for including Venmo, because who carries cash anymore?
I’m all in on this going forward. Save this for your next party ideas and send it to the other parent friends in your life!
