Thirty years ago, a Fender Strat-wielding teenager from Shreveport, Louisiana by the name of Kenny Wayne Shepherd brought the blues back to the mainstream. It was 1995, the era of furrow-browed grungesters, when a sandy-haired guitar prodigy unapologetically celebrated a genre often pushed to the margins. With his fiery fretwork, pop-rock hooks, and reverence for the blues, Shepherd’s arrival was a much-needed palette-cleanser from the existential dread of the times.

Now, three decades later, Shepherd is as vital as ever. No longer the child prodigy, he has ascended to master. Still touring, recording, collaborating, and evolving, he’s returned to where it all began, Ledbetter Heights. Shepherd’s latest is a re-recording of his landmark first album, in honor of its 30th anniversary. In early 2026, he and his band will launch a national tour celebrating the milestone’s anniversary.

While August may have been quiet around here as far as events go, we’ve been hard at work making renovations and repairs for the new season. Dan & Judy, craftsmen extraordinaire, have been repairing parts of the wood veneer through the Mary Seaton Room and the Lobby. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back in just a couple short weeks to see their work! 🪵

The Silkroad Ensemble, featuring Maeve Gilchrist, harp, Mazz Swift, violin, Niwel Tsumbu, guitar, Francesco Turrisi, frame drums, accordion, Kaoru Watanabe, Japanese flutes and percussion, is ecstatic to announce GRAMMY-winning vocalist and composer Cécile McLorin Salvant as the special guest for a limited run of performances that promise to be rich, surprising, and full of musical discovery.

Expect a powerful fusion of improvisation, tradition, and unexpected musical turns as Salvant joins the Ensemble to explore connections across cultures and histories. With family roots in Haiti and France, she brings a deeply personal perspective to the idea of cultural exchange—shaped by a lifelong experience of moving between languages, identities, and stories. For Salvant, Silkroad offers an exciting opportunity to engage with musical traditions beyond her own ones she’s eager to learn from, challenge, and reimagine.

Kleinhans presents Both Sides Now: The Music and Lives of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen starring Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz, a theatrical concert that explores the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers. The cabaret-style performance traverses decades alongside songs such as A Case of You, Hallelujah, Big Yellow Taxi, Suzanne, and many more. Today, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to announce the appointment of Jennifer Barbee as our next President and Executive Director, effective September 1, 2026.

A respected leader with over 15 years of service to the BPO, Jen will build on the orchestra's strong foundation as she works alongside Music Director JoAnn Falletta, our musicians, Board, staff, supporters, and community to lead the next chapter of the BPO's future.
