Placement Audition for UB Dance Minors

UB Dance is excited to announce our first-ever placement audition for Dance minors on Sunday, August 24th, from 10:30am-12:30pm in studio B82, Center for the Arts.

This audition is optional for any Dance minor, regardless of their primary major, who wishes to be placed into the Dance major section of a Fall 2025 Level 1 dance course. These courses are listed below for rererence. This placement audition has been created to allow interested Dance minors the chance to place into these courses based on their experience and training.

Level 1 Dance courses for Fall 2025:
DAC 201 – Modern 1
DAC 213 – Ballet 1
DAC 263 – Jazz 1

If you are not interested in attending this placement audition, you may still register for Open-level dance courses without auditioning.

The audition will include combinations/phrases in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz, similar to program auditions for prospective Dance majors. Phrases will be taught by Dance faculty. Students can be placed into the Dance major section of all three technique courses, or just one or two, depending on their strengths. For instance, a student with extensive ballet training but limited modern or jazz experience might be placed into DAC 213 with Dance majors but not into major sections of modern or jazz.

If you would like to attend this audition, registration is required. Please fill out the brief form at the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScoqO1So7MJuYK6R-MgW7VT3IYMe7Mtpe2tORa1bszOKpEGFg/viewform?usp=preview

Please note that this is the first time we have held a placement audition, and the structure may be adjusted in future semesters. If you wish to be considered for a double major in Dance (BA), further registration materials are required. Please reach out to Michael Deeb Weaver at [email protected] for more information.

Second Generation Theatre Launches Apprentice Program

https://www.buffalorising.com/2025/07/2nd-gen-theatre-launches-apprentice-program/

Applications are currently being accepted for Second Generation Theatre’s new Apprentice Program. The program is described as a workforce development initiative designed to equip the next generation of theatre professionals with the real-world skills, mentorship, and experience needed to thrive in the industry.
“Apprenticeships and residencies are essential bridges between academic training and professional practice for college students,” said Associate Department Chair at the University at Buffalo, Lynne Koscielniak, who noted that UB (2nd Gen’s founding alma mater), Buffalo State, and Niagara University, will now offer course credit for apprentices, linking academic preparation with professional experience.

“When students excel in on-campus production work, the next step is gaining real-world experience—and Buffalo’s vibrant theatre community offers an ideal setting. It’s especially meaningful that UB alumni—now the founders and artistic leaders at 2nd Gen—are making this possible for the next generation. Their commitment gives trained theatre practitioners the chance to stay, grow, and thrive in the region they love.”

UB students who wish to discuss these behind the scenes opportunities at SGT may be in contact with Professor Koscielniak at [email protected]. All are encouraged to read about the opportunities in the article.

In Memoriam: Saul Elkin
Distinguished Professor, Visionary Artist, and Beloved Mentor

The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University at Buffalo joins the greater Western New York arts community in mourning the loss of Saul Elkin, a towering figure in theatre whose influence spanned generations of students, artists, and audiences.

Saul Elkin, PhD, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, joined the University at Buffalo in 1969. He served as Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance from 1976 to 1985, again from 1988 to 1991, and once more as Interim Chair in 2004. His leadership helped shape the department into a vibrant center for theatrical and dance innovation and education. His large Shakespeare lecture courses captivated and educated generations of students across the university, while his brilliant direction of campus productions created countless opportunities for emerging artists to hone their craft. He was the first UB recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and was named a Distinguished Service Professor in 1996.

His impact extended far beyond the classroom. In 1976, Professor Elkin founded Shakespeare in Delaware Park (SDP), one of the nation’s most prominent free Shakespeare festivals. Originally established as a summer apprenticeship program for theatre students from the University at Buffalo to work alongside professional actors, SDP has since grown into a beloved cultural institution. He also co-founded the Jewish Repertory Theatre of Western New York. His many accolades include induction into the Western New York Theatre Hall of Fame (1995), being named “Outstanding Individual Artist of the Year” by the Arts Council (1998), and the enduring gratitude of the countless students, colleagues, and collaborators whose lives he touched.

More than a teacher or director, Saul was a mentor, a visionary, and a champion of the arts. He created space for others to thrive—on stage, behind the scenes, and in the classroom. His legacy lives on in the vibrant theatre community he helped build and in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

On Broadway, dimming the lights is a time-honored tradition used to honor those who have made profound contributions to the world of theatre. This evening, following nightfall, the UB Center for the Arts Atrium Skylights will be dimmed in memory of Vincent O’Neill, in recognition of his enduring legacy and many contributions to the theatre arts and the University community. The lights will be in UB colors to acknowledge his years in teaching and academic leadership.

Vincent O'Neill, professor emeritus in the Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Sciences died on June 17, surrounded by family and friends at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center after a lengthy illness. He was 75.

A faculty member of the UB College of Arts and Sciences and co-founder of Buffalo’s Irish Classical Theatre Company, O’Neill was a leading light in Buffalo's theater community. He is being remembered not only as a masterful actor and mime, a visionary director and a trusted colleague. He was a deeply beloved teacher and mentor.

“He had a rare gift for recognizing and nurturing talent,” says Lynne Koscielniak, professor and associate chair in the Department of Theatre and Dance. “His legacy lives on in the many theatre practitioners he inspired—many of whom are now leaders in the arts across Western New York. Vincent will be profoundly missed, but his spirit endures in the artistry of those he taught, the productions he shaped, and the vibrant community he helped build.”

We join with the larger arts community of Western New York to mourn the loss of Vincent O'Neill, a giant talent of the stage and beloved theatre instructor at University at Buffalo from 1990-2024.

An actor, director, mime artist and lecturer in acting and mime, Vincent was a graduate of University College Dublin and of Trinity College. He trained as an actor at the prestigious Abbey Theatre School, and as a mime artist at Marcel Marceu’s International Mime School in Paris. An internationally acclaimed actor and director, Vincent was a member of the Abbey Theatre Company, and the original Artistic Director of the Irish Classical Theatre Company.

Dr. Kellen Hoxworth Publishes New Research Article in Theatre Journal

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Kellen Hoxworth, PhD, on the publication of his new research article "Alice Childress's Troubling Method: Theatrical 'Truth' and the Cold War Politics of Rehearsing Racial Authenticity."

https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/theatre-dance/news-and-events/recent-news.host.html/content/shared/arts-sciences/theatre-dance/news-posts/THD_SP2025_Article_Hoxworth_Article.detail.html1

Per Theatre Journal, the essay analyzes Alice Childress's artistic and political investments in Stanislavskian approaches to acting such as the "Method" as means for expanding Black agency in US theatre during the Cold War. Childress's play Trouble in Mind and her theatrical manifesto "For a Negro Theatre" offer insight into her critical attention to the processes of theatrical production and to the rehearsal room as a site of artistic labor. Attending to Childress's work amid its recent renaissance invites a reassessment of the politics of Black theatrical authenticity in the long shadow of the Cold War and its enduring orders of racial liberalism.

Assistant Teaching Professor J. Marc Quattlebaum is the puppet designer for “Crocodile Fever,” which runs at the Irish Classical Theatre through June 15, 2025.

"One of my first experiences with theatre in Buffalo was watching a show at Irish Classical during a trip to find an apartment,” Quattlebaum said. “A year later, it feels like I've come full circle. To be able to design and create a puppet for this stage, for this show, and alongside this creative team, has been an absolute honor. In this current age of CGI and AI, I hope the audience will fall in love with the magic of live puppetry. Come see ‘Crocodile Fever!’ You won't be disappointed."

J. Marc Quattlebaum (he/him) serves as Director of Scenic Art and Stage Properties for UB Theatre and Dance. He holds an MFA in Scenic Design from Wayne State University and a BA in Theatre and English from Newberry College. His specialties include prop and puppet design, scenic art, and design for children’s theatre.

Congratulations to Theatre Design/Tech student Lisa Gallagher, who was awarded the prestigious Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center Fellowship for Sound Design at this spring’s Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival National Conference. The Fellowship allows Lisa to work alongside technicians, designers, and playwrights at various conferences at the O'Neill Theatre in Connecticut this summer.

Lisa's work as sound/projection designer on Theatre and Dance’s (THD) production of Ride the Cyclone last October was first recognized at the Region 2 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Pittsburgh. She was awarded the National Sound Design Award, which allowed her to attend KCACTF Nationals in Washington, DC this past April, leading to the O’Neill Award.
