We had about seven minutes to make the photographs in this set. We didn’t need more.

There’s a misconception that creating intentional wedding portraits requires pulling a couple away from their celebration for an hour.
Sometimes it does take time. Most of the time, good planning gives us another option.
With Rebecca + Eric, we had already done the important work before the wedding. We understood the timeline, knew where we wanted to work, and had talked through when portraits made sense within the flow of their day.

So when we had the opportunity, there wasn’t much to figure out.

After family photos we stepped down to the water, spent about five to seven minutes together, made these photographs, so we could move on and get them back to their people as quick as possible.
That’s a big part of what planning means to us.

It’s not about controlling every minute of a wedding before it happens. It’s about making enough decisions beforehand that we don’t have to make them while you should be somewhere else.
We care deeply about making photographs like these.
We just don’t believe they should require you to miss your wedding.

This photograph started in the hotel lobby.

We were walking through the property when Alyssa noticed this couch inside. Since we had been shooting solos in this same space we needed a way to break it up.

Her thought was pretty simple:

What if we brought the couch outside?

So we did.

This happens between us constantly on wedding days.

Alyssa has an incredible ability to look at a space and see what it could become. A piece of furniture sitting somewhere else. The way a dress could occupy a room. A corner of the property we haven’t considered. Something happening just outside of where I’m looking.

She’ll see the possibility of a scene so i can work inside of that space.

Sometimes it works the other way around.

Sometimes one of us sees the light and the other sees the composition. Sometimes one notices a person while the other notices the room around them. And sometimes one of us catches something the other walked right past.

We’ve worked together long enough that we’ve stopped expecting to see weddings the same way.

We think the photographs are better because we don’t.

Simplicity & purpose

These two words distinctly stand out to me when i think about Kelsi & Nicks wedding. There was no tension, no anxiety. Just a celebration centered around their friends, family and 2000s alternative rock 🤘🏽
