The Courtesy of a Clear Call 🀄️

Sometimes good Mahjong etiquette comes down to the smallest habits.

When you want a discarded tile, make your call clearly before reaching for it.

A confident “Call,” “Mahjong,” or the appropriate declaration gives everyone at the table a moment to register what’s happening before the tiles start moving.

It may seem like a tiny detail, but it helps:
✨ Avoid confusion over who is claiming a tile
✨ Keep everyone on the same page
✨ Make the game feel more organized
✨ Create a more comfortable table for newer players

This is especially helpful when experienced and newer players are playing together. You don’t have to rush—just call first, then reach.

Good etiquette doesn’t make a table feel formal. It makes it feel easy. 💙

What do you do when you’re dealt pairs that don’t go together?
New players tend to try to hold onto both pairs to see what will work out in the end… I like to think of it more like a “choose your own adventure”, but choose the path that has the most going for it. Trust me, just decide, split the other pair, and see what great tiles are coming your way.

Stop Counting Tiles. Start Counting Groups.

Ever look at your rack and think, “I have absolutely nothing.”? 🀄️

Before you give up on it, change the way you’re looking at it.

Instead of seeing 13 individual tiles, start looking for building blocks:
✨ Where do you already have a pair?
✨ Do you have three of the same number?
✨ Are two or three tiles beginning to form part of a sequence?
✨ Do several tiles work together for more than one hand?

Suddenly, a rack that looked completely random might become:
“I have a pair here, three working together there, and two more that could build into something.”

That’s much more useful information.

As you get more comfortable with the card, train yourself to recognize groups and relationships first. You don’t need your rack to look like a finished hand yet—you just need enough strong building blocks to give you somewhere to go.

Mahjong Tip: Stop asking, “How many tiles do I have for this hand?” and start asking, “How many parts of this hand am I already building?”

Save this one for the next time your rack looks like a whole lot of nothing. 😉

We spend a lot of time hoping for Jokers in Mahjong.

But this hand? Jokers can’t help you.

Singles & Pairs • Any 1 Suit • Any 7 Consecutive Numbers • Concealed

This Singles & Pairs hand is built entirely from seven pairs of consecutive numbers in the same suit. And because Jokers can’t be used in pairs, you have to build every one naturally.

So when should this hand catch your attention? If you rack your tiles and notice multiple pairs developing in the same suit, don’t be too quick to break them apart during the Charleston.

Stop. Scan Singles & Pairs. See how many consecutive numbers you can connect.

That unusually pair-heavy rack might be giving you a much stronger start than you realized. ✨

The takeaway: Not every great rack needs a Joker. Sometimes the pairs are telling you exactly where to go.

Hey y’all! The Charleston trips up new players more than any other part of the game. Let’s fix it!

Here’s the one thing I tell every single player before their very first pass:

You’re not building a hand yet. You’re just clearing the clutter.

That’s the whole mindset shift. Don’t sit there trying to solve the entire puzzle in three seconds — just look at your tiles and ask “what doesn’t fit?” Pass those. Let them go. The winning hand reveals itself later, I promise.

Take a deep breath. Trust your gut. And remember….There’s no such thing as a perfect Charleston!
