Today’s Flower: Gerbera Daisy

Splurge Scale: $$

It’s almost impossible to look at a Gerbera and be in a bad mood.

Big round face. Ridiculously bright colors. Absolutely no interest in being subtle.

Gerberas come in just about every color you could want - from white and soft pastels to hot pink, orange, yellow, coral and deep red. And beyond the classic daisy shape, there are minis, doubles and wonderfully wild spider varieties.

✨ What Gerberas Bring to a Design

• A big, clean pop of color
• Very little visual bulk around the bloom
• A playful, modern feel
• Lots of personality from a single stem

🌿 Did You Know?

That big Gerbera “flower” isn’t actually one flower.

It’s made up of hundreds of tiny individual flowers packed together into a single flower head.

Take a close look at the center next time you see one. There’s a lot going on in there.

🌿 Behind the Design

For all that cheerful confidence up top, Gerberas have one slight problem.

The stem.

It’s long, soft and occasionally less committed to standing upright than I’d prefer.

So when one needs extra support, out comes the floral wire.

I carefully push a fine wire through the neck of the stem just beneath the bloom, then gently spiral it down the outside of the stem.

It gives me support and more control over exactly where that big flower face sits in the arrangement.

The trick is to support it without making it look like it’s wearing a brace.

Some flowers I’m willing to let wander, like tulips. I usually need the Gerbera to stay put.

Bright. Happy. Slightly high-maintenance. 🌼💛

Today’s Stem: Hypericum Berries

Splurge Scale: $$

These little guys show up in my arrangements all the time.

And almost nobody knows their name.

Meet Hypericum berries.

Tiny. Round. Colorful. And surprisingly useful.

They come in green, cream, peach, coral, pink, red, and deep burgundy—which means there’s almost always a Hypericum willing to coordinate with whatever I have going on.

🌿 Vase Life: About 7–14 days

✨ What They Bring to a Design

• Little pops of color
• A completely different texture
• Interest between larger blooms
• A way to fill small spaces without adding another flower

🌿 Did You Know?

Before there were berries, there were flowers.

Hypericum first produces small yellow flowers. After the flowers finish blooming, these colorful little fruits develop.

So while Behind the Bloom is technically about flowers…

Today we’re featuring what happened after the flower left.

🌿 Behind the Design

There’s usually a point in an arrangement when I stand back, look at it and think:

It needs something.

Not another rose.

Not another big bloom.

Just…something.

This is often the something.

A few Hypericum berries tucked between larger flowers add little dots of color and texture exactly where I need them.

They’re especially good when I want to fill a small visual gap without actually filling it.

And I can change the whole feel depending on the color - green feels fresh, peach and pink soften things, and burgundy adds depth.

Nobody has ever called me and said:

“Michele, I’d like an arrangement with Hypericum berries.”

Not once. 😂

But they leave my studio in arrangements all the time.

And now that you know what they are, you’ll probably start spotting them everywhere. 🩷🌸

Today’s Flower: Tulip

Splurge Scale: $$–$$$

I have a complicated relationship with tulips.

I put them exactly where I want them.

And then they do whatever they want. 😂

Tulips are one of the few cut flowers that continue to grow after they’re cut…sometimes several inches in the vase. They also bend and turn toward light, which means the arrangement you make today may look a little different tomorrow.

Tulips apparently consider my design more of a suggestion.

• Beautiful natural movement
• Clean, simple lines
• Incredible seasonal color
• A look that can be modern, romantic, or wonderfully loose

🌿 Did You Know?

Tulips have a daily routine.

They often open in brighter light and warmth, then close again when it gets cooler or darker.

So if your tulips seem to be changing throughout the day, you’re not imagining it.

They’re busy.

🌿 Behind the Design

Tulips are one of those flowers I’ve learned not to over-manage.

Their stems naturally curve, stretch and move. I can place them intentionally, but I also know they’re going to continue changing after they leave my hands.

So rather than fight them, I try to give them room to do what tulips do.

And there are SO many varieties beyond the classic tulip most of us picture - double tulips that almost resemble peonies, fringed tulips with feathery edges, parrot tulips with wildly ruffled petals, and some incredible specialty colors.

They can be elegant.

They can be dramatic.

They can be a little unruly.

Mostly, they’re going to do what they want.

I just work here. 😂

Today’s Flower: Bells of Ireland

Let’s begin with the obvious.

Bells of Ireland aren’t from Ireland. 😂

They’re native to parts of the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. The Irish connection likely came later, thanks to their brilliant green color and association with good luck.

✨ What They Bring to a Design

• Height and strong vertical lines
• Fresh, bright green color
• Great texture
• Structure without a lot of visual weight

🌿 Did You Know?

Those green “bells” aren’t actually the flowers.

They’re calyces…leaf-like structures surrounding the tiny flowers tucked inside.

And then there’s the smell.

Apparently, Bells of Ireland are something of a floral Rorschach test.

I’ve seen their scent described as green apple, mint, citrus, candy…even Skittles.

And then there are the people who say…cat p*e. 😹

I’m not sure how we got from Skittles to cat p*e, but here we are. You might want to conduct your own investigation.

🌿 Behind the Design

I reach for Bells of Ireland when I want to change the shape of a design. Those tall stems create a strong vertical line and pull your eye upward. I can leave them tall, stagger them through an arrangement, or work with their natural curves to keep things from feeling too structured.

And that green is surprisingly versatile. Whites and creams, pastels, bright colors…it plays well with almost everything.

One thing you won’t necessarily notice in the finished arrangement: they can have some surprisingly sharp little spines hiding around those bells.

So let’s review.

Not Irish.

The bells aren’t flowers.

May smell like Skittles.

May smell like cat p*e.

Might stab you.

And florists still buy them on purpose.

This is one I wish we had a scratch-and-sniff feature for. Stock is pretty, certainly.

But the fragrance is really the story. It has a sweet, slightly spicy scent that can perfume an entire arrangement - and sometimes a good portion of the room it’s sitting in.

✨ What Stock Brings to a Design

• Fragrance - lots of it
• Soft vertical lines
• Full, ruffled texture
• Beautiful color from white and blush to lavender, purple, peach and deeper tones

🌿 Did You Know?

Stock belongs to the mustard family, along with cabbage, broccoli and kale.

Which seems completely unreasonable when you smell it. 😂

🌿 Behind the Design

I like stock when I want height, but I don’t want a hard vertical line.

A snapdragon gives me a cleaner, more defined line. Stock is fuller and softer, so it can add height while also filling space between larger blooms.

And then there’s the fragrance. That matters to me because an arrangement isn’t only something you look at. Scent can change the whole experience of receiving flowers.

Of course, that also means I’m careful about where I use it. If someone is sensitive to fragrance - or the flowers are going into a hospital room or another setting where scent could be an issue - I may choose something else.

Otherwise, stock is one of those flowers you often smell before you know its name. And once you do know its name, you’ll start recognizing it everywhere. 🩷🌸

It would be an anemone.

That dramatic center has a way of drawing you in before you even notice the petals.

And once you do…it’s hard to look away.

Anemones often arrive with their blooms partially closed, then continue opening over the next few days, revealing more of that striking center.

Let’s just acknowledge the elephant in the room…Yes. They’re really called Billy Balls.

Fortunately, the flower is every bit as delightful as its name.

Bright yellow, perfectly round, and impossible to ignore, Billy Balls have a way of making an arrangement feel a little happier. It’s like a pom-pom on a stick.

They’re one of the longest-lasting flowers in my studio and dry beautifully, making them just as charming weeks later.

Sunshine in a vase. Soft. Gentle.

I don’t believe flowers solve hard things. I do believe they can interrupt them.

Every arrangement leaves my studio hoping to do a little more than decorate a room. I hope it reminds someone they’re loved, remembered, and held with great care.

One of the unexpected gifts of being a florist is that I get to witness moments most people never see.

A knock on the door. A puzzled look that turns into a smile.

“These are for me?”

Sometimes there are tears. Sometimes laughter. Almost always surprise.

And every single time, I’m reminded that flowers have very little to do with flowers.

They’re tangible proof that someone paused in the middle of a busy life and thought of another person.

One of my favorite things is when customers send me photos after the delivery. Seeing an arrangement sitting on a desk, brightening a kitchen table, or simply bringing a smile to someone’s face reminds me that I don’t just get to design flowers….I get to play a very small part in someone’s act of kindness.

The flowers are beautiful, of course. But it’s the love behind it that people remember. 🩷🌸

Every now and then, a stem comes along that makes people stop, point, and ask…

“Wait…what is that?”

These are scabiosa pods.

They started as flowers, and after the petals fell away, they became these wonderfully quirky little seed pods that florists absolutely love.

🌿 Vase Life: 2–3 weeks (often even longer)

Scabiosa pods last beautifully and dry just as beautifully, which makes them a favorite in both fresh and everlasting designs.

Those tiny little openings on top?

That’s where the seeds develop before they’re released to grow the next generation of flowers.

Nature thought of everything.

I have a soft spot for the stems that don’t look like everyone expects.

Perfectly polished flowers are lovely…but then along comes a scabiosa pod with its funny little shape and quirky personality, and suddenly the whole arrangement feels more interesting. 🩷🌸
