It has been almost exactly 10 years since the first (and last) time I saw Rahaan live, so hosting him tonight feels like a full circle moment. 🪩✨
I was on my honeymoon in Spain and it happened to be the opening night of Javi Frias’ Discotizer at Cafe Marula (IYKYK). We had just come from a magical first meeting with a longtime internet friend. Our now dear friend Rob AKA Heavy Usker had an outsized influence on our ears and was basically the soundtrack of the early years of our relationship via his most-excellent and life-changing podcast, Radio Madrid.
The truth is that I wouldn’t sound the way I do without Rob’s influence. And even though I had quit DJing for 7 years at that point, I realize now that the magic of that one long night planted the seeds of so many things that I’ve been doing since (returning to the decks, hosting a radio show, producing events, and playing an eclectic style, rooted in a love of disco).
So, of course it would be Rob that took us to this amazing little event in the tiniest postage stamp of a club tucked way back into a neighborhood of sprawling Madrid! Rahaan provided the soundtrack to such a special night and for that I will be forever grateful.
Music is memory and Rahaan’s final track of the night is one I will always remember: Cassiano - Onda (Heck, he may even remember me standing at the booth screaming it from the top of my lungs! 😆 I’ll have to tell him this story when I pick him up from the airport in a few hours).
When that final track finished, I came out of the haze of being drunk on joy and realized that it was 5am and we needed to pack our 💩 and be on our next flight to Ibiza at 7am! 😱
In a mad, but hilarious dash, Rob was kind enough to get us back to our apartment and watched us scramble to get our 💩 together. We barely made our flight and started the next leg of the trip exhausted, but overflowing with good feelings from finally getting to meet a new/old friend and having it soundtracked by such a legendary DJ in a magical little out-of-the-way club.
