This is probably one of the hardest posts I’ve had to write since starting Madam Towing
After going to Auckland and chatting with a few business owners, I’ve been thinking a lot about the future of my business. I’ve heard so many people share their journeys, talk about growing their businesses and bringing employees on board, and it’s really got me thinking about what that could look like for Madam Towing
There’s so much I can do on my own, but there’s also only so much one person can do
The truth is, the idea of sharing my baby with someone else is a pretty big thing for me. Madam Towing is something I’ve built with so much love, care and passion, and letting someone else be part of it is not a decision I would take lightly
I can’t promise that I’m going to hire someone. I can’t even promise that, if I do, it will be the right fit or something that lasts. But I’m opening the door to the possibility and thought I’d put it out there to see what happens
So, what would I be looking for?
First of all, and more importantly, you would need to be a genuinely nice human being
I can teach someone how I do the job, but I can’t teach someone to care
At Madam Towing, we work with people’s babies, and I take that responsibility very seriously. My business has been built on strong values, trust, care and a genuine desire to help people. I would want someone who shares those values and treats every customer, every vehicle and every job with the same respect and attention to detail that I do
You would need to be someone who enjoys what you do, takes pride in your work, cares about helping people and is just as fussy about the little details as I am (or even fussier I wouldn’t mind)
I have established rules and procedures that must be followed on every job, and it would be really important that you’re willing to learn them and follow them properly. And making sure every job is done properly would be essential
There’s also something else that would make this next step particularly special to me
As a woman who started Madam Towing, I would absolutely love to see another woman working alongside me
I’m really passionate about empowering women in this industry and showing that we can do this too. I would love the opportunity to bring another woman into the business, share my knowledge, support her and hopefully help her grow alongside Madam Towing
I’ve built this business myself, and the idea of helping another woman find her place in the industry and become confident in what she does is something I would genuinely love to be able to do
That being said, I’m absolutely not ruling out having a man join the team, either. For me, the most important thing will always be finding the right person, someone who shares the same values, passion and care for the job
I would love to get to the point where my customers are asking for you by name, trusting you with their vehicles and feeling just as comfortable with you as they do with me. I’d love to see Madam Towing grow into something we could build together
For now, though, all my regular customer jobs would still be looked after by me
A couple of important things:
✨You would need ideally to hold a class 2
✨You would need to live in Wanaka. I wouldn’t want someone to move here for a position when I can’t promise where this opportunity might lead
✨You would need to have the right attitude, values and genuine care for people and their vehicles
✨You would need to be happy following the procedures and standards I’ve put in place for every job
I’m not putting out an official job advertisement just yet. I’m simply opening my mind to the idea and seeing if there might be someone out there who could be the right fit
Maybe we meet for a coffee, have a chat, get to know each other and see how we feel about it. Maybe we try something out for a little while and see how it goes. Or maybe we decide it’s not for us, and that’s okay too
There’s no pressure, no promises and no commitment at this stage. I’m just putting the idea out there and seeing what happens
Who knows? Maybe this is the beginning of the next chapter for Madam Towing 🩷
