❄️ THE SOLAR WINTER - Just over a week ago marked the start to the Solar Winter here in New Zealand..🧐

👉 Good evening Otago, just over a week ago (May 11th) marked the start to the Solar winter here in New Zealand along with the rest of the Southern Hemisphere. It is the 12 weeks of the year with the least amount of available sunlight which means our shortest days and longest nights are here to stay until early August.

The solar winter is measured six weeks either side of the winter solstice which is known as ‘the shortest day of the year’ on June 22nd at precisely 2.57am.

New Zealand’s coldest weather usually peaks at the end of the solar winter. However, it does take time for us here in Otago to warm up as our cold weather does stick around until the end of September as the southern ocean is still pretty active.

The solar winter is just one of three start dates to winter because if you go by the ‘Meteorological Calendar’ then winter begins June 1st. However, if your go by the ‘Astronomical Calendar’ then winter starts on June 21st which is the Winter Solstice.

The days are now getting noticeably shorter because for example the sunrise and sunset times for Dunedin today was 7.56am and 5.12pm, where just over a month from now on the shortest day of the year the sun will rise at 8.20am and set at 4.59pm which makes for only 8 hours, 39mins and 11 seconds of daylight.

📝 FRIENDLY NOTE - We here at OWU operate this page in our own time. Keep liking and sharing our updates and spread the word so we become a bigger influence around Otago. The more likes we get in each post makes it worth posting the next one..🙌

**Update - 8.30am**
The Crown Range remains closed between Eastburn Road and Cardrona village. Some remaining snow needs to be cleared at the summit, before grit can be laid on the road. Next update 10.00am.

**Winter Road Report**
6.40am - Thursday 11 May

Quick overview of road conditions today, for what's more like an autumn road report.

The Crown Range remains closed. Crews are working to clear snow and ice and to grit the road, and we'll have another update on it at 8.30am. More snow is expected to fall this morning, so make sure you have chains in your vehicle and know how to fit them.

In the Whakatipu, roads are wet and temperatures are hovering around freezing. Take care on bridge decks and in shady spots around day break.

Coronet Peak Road is closed due to snow. Update to come at 8.30am.

The Lindis Pass is open but extreme care is required. Ploughs are still working to clear now there.

Some snow has fallen around Kingston, and we have reports of a tree down on the road about 5km north of the township. Please slow down and drive with care.
