Night photos work best when they don’t try to light everything.

This shot of Tayla and Jackson at Tui Hills in 2021 keeps most of the Kowhai Glade dark, then uses the rotunda like a little stage in the middle of the bush. The backlight does the heavy lifting, picking out the couple, the foliage and just enough of the path to give the image shape.

It’s dramatic, but still natural to the setting. You get the sense of being tucked away in the garden after dark, without the photo feeling overdone or artificial.

That’s what makes the Kowhai Glade useful beyond the ceremony. It doesn’t stop working once the sun goes down. With the right lighting, it becomes a completely different kind of photo spot.

🍽️ BUFFET, BUT MAKE IT LOOK GOOD 🍽️

Buffets get a bad rap. Usually because people picture something beige, grey and sitting under a heat lamp looking sorry for itself.

This Nikau Pavilion set-up is a better version of it. Colourful salads, bright yellow pasta, glossy Asian-style dishes, crisp roast potatoes and properly carved meat. It looks fresh, generous and like something guests actually want to go back for.

That matters. Food is part of how the room feels, not just what people eat. When the buffet looks this good, it adds to the whole reception rather than feeling like a practical compromise.

A good buffet shouldn’t just feed people. It should make them hungry when they see it.

There’s a lot happening before a bride walks down the aisle, but this image doesn’t feel rushed at all.

Val is in the Tui Suite in July last year, putting in her earrings before the ceremony. It’s simple, bright and calm, but there’s still plenty going on in her expression. A bit of focus. A bit of anticipation. And that quiet “right, let’s do this” energy.

That’s what makes the shot work. It isn’t dramatic. It doesn’t need to be. It catches the moment before everything becomes public.

Having the Tui Suite on site helps with that. Brides don’t have to arrive already switched on, dressed and managing nerves in a car park. They’ve got a private space to get ready, settle themselves, and step away again later if they need a breather during the wedding.

As Val said, “having to chill in the Tui Suite to compose myself before walking down the aisle” was one of the hire items she appreciated.

☎️ LEAVE A MESSAGE AFTER THE BEEP ☎️

This is one of the more fun extras now included in our styling packages at Tui Hills.

The audio guest book is set up like an old dial-up phone, so guests can pick it up and leave a voice message for the couple. It can sit alongside a written guest book, or replace it entirely if you want something with a bit more personality.

Written messages are lovely, but hearing people’s actual voices, the laughs, the pauses, the slightly emotional bits, gives you a very different kind of keepsake.

It’ll be a pretty great thing for children and grandchildren to hear in years to come. Although you may need to explain what a rotary phone was.

Some reception photos work because they don’t tidy the room up too much.

This shot from Darian and Tim’s Pasifika wedding at Tui Hills in July 2024 has the couple right in the middle of the action, surrounded by family, laughter, applause and tapa cloths being held out for money gifts.

It’s busy in the best way. You can see the Nectar Room full of people who aren’t just watching the moment, they’re part of it. The couple’s faces say plenty too. They’re relaxed, smiling, and clearly enjoying the chaos.

That’s what makes the image strong. It’s not a quiet portrait or a perfectly arranged detail shot. It’s culture, family and generosity happening in real time.

It also shows why the reception space needs to work for more than dinner and speeches. Weddings often include moments that need room, movement and a crowd that can gather close without the whole thing feeling cramped.

As Darian said, Tui Hills was “perfect for our intimate wedding with the 3 spaces being in 1 location!”

🌾 STAY CLOSE, STAY COMFORTABLE 🌾

Chapman House is a properly useful add-on for Tui Hills weddings.

It’s only a couple of minutes’ walk from the venue, which means no transport shuffle, no awkward timing gaps, and no one trying to get ready out of a cramped hotel room. With five rooms and space for up to 10 guests, it gives the wedding party or close family somewhere comfortable to stay, get organised, and keep the day moving.

This photo from Megan and Steve’s April wedding says it neatly. Bouquets lined up, soft natural light, room to breathe. It’s not just accommodation nearby. It’s accommodation that actually fits the way a wedding day works.

You can feel the ceremony getting close in this one.

Bethany is in the Tui Suite in 2022, dressed and nearly ready, with one of her bridesmaids behind her and just enough reflection in the frame to make the image feel like we’re seeing the moment unfold properly.

It’s calm, but not flat. There’s a bit of excitement in her face, a bit of “are we really doing this now?” energy, and the bridesmaid’s smile in the background gives the shot its lift.

That’s why the Tui Suite matters. It isn’t just a room to get changed in. It gives the bridal party a proper space to settle in, get ready, take a breath, and still have those small pre-ceremony moments photographed without everyone being rushed around.

As Bethany said, “Everyone loved how we could spend the whole day there, from getting ready, to the ceremony, canapés and reception.”

This is the getting-ready part doing its job.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - BIG LETTERS, BIG DANCEFLOOR ENERGY 📷

Some dancefloor shots work because everything lines up at once.

This one of Vanessa and Mohamed at Tui Hills in May 2021 has movement, colour and a bit of cheek. They’re mid-dance, clearly having a laugh, while the giant LOVE letters throw a proper glow across the floor.

That’s what makes the image land. The letters aren’t just decoration in the background. They change the whole feel of the room, adding colour, reflections and a clear focal point without pulling attention away from the couple.

It’s also a good reminder that venue hire items can do more than fill space. Used well, they help create atmosphere, especially once the formalities are done and everyone’s ready to loosen up.

As Vanessa put it, “music was definitely loud enough, and we danced the night away.”

Looks about right.

🥖 FRESHLY BUILT, PROPERLY LOADED 🥖

A good grazing table has to look generous, but it also has to look alive.

For Sophia and Angelo’s wedding this month, Reg and Steve were still building the anti-pasto table right before guests came through - which is exactly the point. The breads stay fresh, the cheeses look their best, the fruit has colour, and nothing has been sitting around losing the plot.

That matters more than people think. A grazing table is part of the room as much as it is part of the menu, so it needs to arrive looking sharp.

This one did.
