That view behind a marquee? It only looks like this in winter.

Snow on the Kaikouras, frost on the grass, and your event warm and glowing inside. Canterbury in July and August shows its best face, and it's genuinely stunning.

It also demands planning that a summer event doesn't.

Canterbury's weather has a personality of its own, and it rarely reads the run sheet.

After nearly two decades of setting up marquees across the region, from mountain-backdrop weddings to city corporate functions, we've noticed the same four questions separate a smooth event day from a stressful one.

1. What's the surface? Grass, concrete, deck, gravel? It changes everything. Peg and pole marquees need grass. Frame marquees work on hard or soft surfaces. Gazebos aren't built for Canterbury wind or rain, no matter what the forecast says.

2. Size up, not down. Guest count is the starting point, not the answer. Once you factor in a dance floor, bar, buffet, and space for people to actually move, that "cosy" marquee gets tight fast.

3. Weather contingency. Sun, wind, and a southerly can all show up in the same afternoon. Sides, flooring, and heating aren't add-ons here. They're the plan B that keeps plan A running.

4. Delivery and setup timing. The best dates book out early, especially over wedding and festival season. Locking in your slot weeks ahead means we can set up on your timeline, not squeeze around it.

A venue gives you four walls. A marquee gives you any location you want, including your own backyard.

That's the real difference most people don't think about until they've already put down a deposit.

Booking a venue means working within fixed capacity, fixed décor rules, and dates that suit the venue's calendar rather than yours. It's the right call if you want a built-in space with zero setup responsibility.

Hiring a marquee flips the equation. You choose the location, the layout, the styling, and the timeline. Your farm, your family's back paddock, a scenic Canterbury site, a corporate car park transformed for one night only. The setting becomes part of the story.

Best for venues: convenience and simplicity. Best for marquees: full control over how the day looks, feels, and flows.

The marquee is usually the last thing couples book, and the first thing guests notice when they walk in.

Getting the package right means thinking beyond the tent itself. It's the floor underfoot, the light overhead, and whether the walls frame the view or block it out entirely.

Five decisions worth thinking through before you sign anything:

1. Frame vs peg-and-pole. Frame marquees give you a clear, open floor plan. Peg-and-pole brings that classic silk-lined ceiling and softer character.

2. Clear vs silk-lined walls. Crystal-clear panels open the space to the garden or the stars. Lined walls create warmth and intimacy after dark.

3. Flooring. Grass, matting, or a full timber floor changes how the day feels underfoot, especially if rain shows up uninvited.

4. Lighting. Festoons, chandeliers, or fairy lights each set a completely different mood once the sun drops.

5. Consent requirements. Some venues and council zones need approvals before the marquee goes up. Worth checking early, not late.

A gazebo doesn't stand a chance against a Canterbury nor'wester. We've seen it happen more times than we'd like.

Every season, customers book a gazebo or pop-up party tent thinking it's just a smaller, cheaper marquee. It isn't. Gazebos are shade structures. They're built to block sun at a backyard BBQ, not to hold their ground when the wind picks up.

A proper marquee is a different piece of equipment entirely. Frame and peg-and-pole marquees are anchored into the ground, tensioned across every seam, and engineered to stay put when conditions turn. That matters here. Canterbury weather can shift from still air to 60km/h gusts in under an hour, and your guests, your caterers, and your sound gear are all sitting underneath whatever you chose.

The price difference reflects the engineering difference. One is a sunshade. The other is a structure built for a real event.
