Karakol: where mountains meet culture
Back from the mountains and enjoying a slower pace in Karakol.
We stayed at the wonderful Duet Café Hotel — warm beds, delicious food, and the best chai after days in the wild.
Karakol has surprises at every corner: a wooden Orthodox church, a peaceful Dungan mosque, and a buzzing local market full of flavors and faces.
There were laughs, shared stories, and moments of calm.
After the effort: pure joy.

On the way to Ala Kul

Day one of our 3-day trek to the stunning Ala Kul Lake and the hot springs of Altyn Arashan.
Tonight, we’re sleeping in a cozy yurt camp at the foot of a high mountain pass. The air is fresh, the silence deep, and the sky ever-changing — mountain weather keeps us guessing.
But even under the clouds, the beauty of the Kyrgyz wilderness is overwhelming.
Tomorrow, we hike up to discover the jewel of the trail: Ala Kul. Can’t wait.

🦅 An Afternoon with an Eagle Hunter — Kyrgyzstan’s Living Tradition

High in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, we had one of those rare, humbling travel moments. We met a berkutchi, a traditional eagle hunter, and his majestic golden eagle.

This ancient practice, passed down through generations, is more than hunting — it’s a deep bond between human and bird, forged through trust, discipline, and respect. The hunter we met learned the art from his father, and now, his young son watches closely, ready to inherit the legacy.

Getting up close to the eagle was breathtaking. Its piercing gaze, powerful talons, and sheer weight (yes, we had the chance to hold it — carefully!) left us speechless. It’s one thing to read about these birds; it’s another to feel the strength of centuries of tradition perched on your arm.

Kyrgyzstan keeps surprising us with its raw beauty and living heritage.
Moments like these remind us why we travel. ✨

Today we explored the magical Fairytale Canyon (Skazka) on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan — and it truly lives up to its name. Sculpted by wind and time, the red and orange rock formations twist and rise like something out of a fantasy novel: castles, dragons, labyrinths… your imagination runs wild with every step.

Located about 30 minutes from Tosor, the canyon is easy to reach and doesn’t require a guide. The hike is not too difficult, but bring water and good shoes — the sun can be relentless and there’s little shade.

If you’re in Kyrgyzstan, don’t miss this surreal, almost Martian landscape. It’s not just a place to see — it’s a place to feel.

After the 4 days on horseback, we set off for a 3-day hike. Our first stage takes us to the shores of Lake Kol Ukok, where we stay with a semi-nomadic family. Off the beaten track, Kol Ukok is even more unspoilt than Son Kul, and we have a wonderful time with our hosts. On the second day, we head for the snow-covered Kol Tor lake at higher altitude. What a view! Back at our hosts’, we share a memorable evening before making the reverse journey the next day. We really need a rest.

Son Kul - part 1: We’ve just had an incredible experience. 4 days of horseback riding to reach the shores of Lake Son Kul. We pushed ourselves to the limit physically (and yes, horseback riding is no picnic), but we came back with our hearts overflowing. Filled with wonder at this natural immensity, but also with memories and encounters. I’ll tell you more about it soon.
