SUMO KNOWLEDGE 🇯🇵

Have you ever heard the phrases “Hakkeyoi!” and “Nokotta!” during a sumo match?

These are traditional calls made by the Gyoji (sumo referee) to help guide the bout.

“Hakkeyoi!” encourages the wrestlers to keep fighting, while “Nokotta!” means the match is still in progress and neither wrestler has lost yet.

These iconic calls are an essential part of the excitement and tradition of sumo.

The next time you watch sumo, listen carefully—you’ll know exactly what they mean!

Today, July 7th, is Tanabata, one of Japan’s most beloved traditional festivals.

On this special day, people write their wishes on colorful paper strips called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches, hoping their dreams will come true.

Tanabata is a beautiful tradition that reminds us of the importance of hope, dreams, and the changing seasons in Japan.
