The Doors: An Evening in Laurel Canyon

Transport yourself to 1960s and ‘70s California, when Laurel Canyon became a creative haven for some of the greatest songwriters and musicians in history. Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, The Doors began with a chance meeting on Venice Beach between two UCLA film students: poet and future frontman Jim Morrison and keyboard player Ray Manzarek.

They were soon joined by guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, creating a quartet whose sound was unlike anything else around. Their name was inspired by Aldous Huxley’s book The Doors of Perception, itself connected to a famous line by poet William Blake. It was a fitting name for a band determined to push musical and lyrical boundaries.

🎹 A BAND THAT BROKE THE RULES
While many groups of the era relied on a conventional guitar, bass and drums line-up, The Doors had no regular bass guitarist on stage. Manzarek’s keyboard playing supplied the bass lines, while his swirling organ sound became one of the band’s defining features.
Morrison brought dark, compelling poetry and an unforgettable stage presence. Krieger added bluesy and flamenco-influenced guitar, while Densmore’s jazz-inspired drumming gave the music its distinctive rhythmic freedom.

Together, they blended rock, blues, jazz and psychedelia into something unmistakably their own
