At today's NIMRA League event, the 'Buzzards Roost', it was Newcastle Athletic Club pair Ashley Crutchley and Rebecca Magee who raced to victory.

Having shown great form over longer distances this year, Ashley has adjusted really well to the relatively shorter routes throughout the local season, previously winning NIMRA league races at Annalong Horseshoe and Spelga Skyline. Ashley raced to another league win here, with the Newcastle man moving clear of the talented Niall McCartan BARF and Adam Cunningham from the host club, Mourne Runners, to win convincingly in 1:13:03. McCartan finished in 2nd (1:14:26), whilst Mourne man Cunningham claimed 3rd in 1:18:15.

In the women's race, Northern Ireland International Rebecca covered the 7.5 mile course (3000ft +/-) in an excellent 1:32:47, to secure another Championship win. Talented Glens Runners woman Naomi McCurry took 2nd place in 1:39:20, before the improving Holly Fisher (Newcastle AC) claimed 3rd in 1:42:49.

Away from road running, a big congratulations to Danny Squires of Annadale Striders, who convincingly won the 46k race at the popular EcoTrail Wicklow events (yesterday).

Northern Ireland & Ireland mountain runner Zak Hanna, of Newcastle Athletic Club and New Balance, won the 19k race.

Yesterday, in what was a fantastic championship race at the excellent North Down Athletic Club Seaton Classic 10k, it was Andrew Milligan of North Belfast Harriers who took the win in 31:08 and the Athletics NI 10k Road Running title.

Andrew was pushed right to the finish line by the experienced Danny Mooney (31:10)and Michael Fox (31:12), both of Letterkenny AC.

In the women's race, it was Dearbhla Cox of Annadale Striders who raced to victory. In what was a classic display of perseverance, Dearbhla led from the early stages and crossed the line in an impressive 36:55.

Annadale Striders club-mate Harriet Buswell claimed second place (37:58) , before North Down AC athlete Rachel Gibson took 3rd.

In the team race, it was Annandale Striders who claimed the women's title, whilst Letterkenny AC recorded another Championship win in the men's event.

NEWCASTLE TO HOST 2026 BRITISH & IRISH JUNIOR MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The premier junior mountain runners from across
the UK and Ireland will descend on County Down as Newcastle hosts the 2026 British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships (Junior Home International) on Saturday, 12th September 2026.

Centered around the slopes of the Mourne Mountains, the prestigious event will see national junior squads from Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, and NI & Ulster go head to head across U18 and U20 age categories.

The competition course traverses the iconic trails of Donard Forest, bringing together top international talent alongside an open individual field.

"We are delighted to bring the British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships back to Newcastle," said the organising committee.

Representatives went on to say "The Mournes provide a world-class setting for mountain running. With separate U18 and U20 courses featuring challenging climbs and fast forest tracks, it promises to be an exceptional showcase of top-tier junior athletic talent."

Event details:
● Event Date: Saturday, 12 September 2026. First race 10am.
● Location: Starting and finishing in Donard Forest (Greenhill YMCA), Newcastle, County Down.
● Competing Nations: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and NI & Ulster.
● Race Format: Dedicated U18 and U20 male and female championship races (~8km with ~240m+ ascent), alongside open individual entries.

Members of the public and local supporters are invited to Donard Park along the lower Donard Forest tracks, and in Tollymore Forest Park to cheer on the athletes throughout the day.

Earlier today Tom Crudgington of Newcastle Athletic Club won the iconic Ben Nevis Race in a fantastic time of 1:38:02.

In recent years, we've seen NIMRA / Athletics NI women Sarah Hanna Mourne Runners and Diane Wilson Dromore AC take victory over the historic course (9.7 miles / 1350m +/-). Tom has been dominant on the local scene and now adds his name to the Ben Nevis history books.

Congratulations to Tom and all of the Northern Ireland athletes who raced! 👏

This afternoon, in Carrickfergus, Seapark AC hosted the 10th edition of their popular Storming The Castle 10k road race. Annually the event is sold out, 2026 proved no different, with over 1000 participants taking to the streets of the historic County Antrim coastal town.

It was Kieran Kelly of Raheny Shamrocks who led the field home in 32:13, with John Black North Belfast Harriers not too far behind in 32:41. Ben Emes of CNDR took 3rd in 33:01.

An inform Gemma Turley of Ballycastle Runners AC recorded another victory in a new course record time of 37:46, whilst Kerry Knipe of (County Antrim Harriers) impressed in 2nd place (40:04). NewryCity Runners athlete Shauna Hollywood raced to 3rd in 40:46.

Last night, in Coleraine, Danny Mooney of Letterkenny AC won the Athletics NI NI & Ulster 5k Road Championships, hosted by Springwell Running Club. In a close race, Danny claimed the prestigious title in 14:35.

Annadale Striders man Neil Johnston raced to 2nd in 14:37, before Oisin McGloin Lagan Valley AC took 3rd in 14:40.

A brilliant Hannah Gilliland (Annadale Striders) retained the title that she won in 2025, covering the lapped course in 16:39, before Emer McKee of CNDR Track Club secured 2nd place in 17:09. Catherine Martin (Lagan Valley AC) took an impressive 3rd in 17:23.
