One of the easiest ways to make skiing feel more complicated than it needs to be?

Assuming you have to buy everything before your first day.

For World Tourism Day, we’re celebrating the places skiing and snowboarding can take us.

The slopes might be the reason for the trip, but they’re rarely the whole experience.

A winter getaway can mean discovering a new mountain town, eating at local restaurants, exploring shops and villages, spending time together at the lodge, and experiencing a part of Canada you might not otherwise visit.

Skiing isn’t something your family had to grow up doing.

For families who are completely new to the sport, a ski area can feel unfamiliar at first. There are new words, new equipment, new routines and plenty of questions about what actually happens when you arrive.

But every family you see confidently heading toward the lift had a first day too.

Beginner lessons and programs are designed to help people learn from the beginning. You can ask questions, take your time and figure out what works for your family without needing any previous experience.

Maybe it becomes a tradition you return to every winter. Maybe it simply becomes a day your family remembers trying something new together.

Thinking about trying skiing or snowboarding as a family this winter? Your first day doesn’t need to be complicated.

Start with a few simple choices:

🎿 Rent the equipment. You can try the sport before investing in skis, snowboards, boots or other gear of your own.

🧥 Dress for the weather. Warm, waterproof layers matter more than having a closet full of ski-specific clothing on day one.

🙌 Book a beginner lesson. Having someone guide those first turns can make the experience feel much more manageable for both kids and parents.

A local ski hill can have a much bigger impact than its size might suggest.

Loch Lomond Ski Area in Thunder Bay has introduced generations of families to skiing while also earning a reputation as a “Cradle of Champions.”

It’s a reminder of the role community ski areas play across Canada. They’re where kids take their first lessons, families build winter traditions, local athletes begin developing their skills, and sometimes, future champions get their start.

Not every first run leads to a podium, and it doesn’t need to. For most of us, it leads to something just as valuable: another day outside, a new skill, a family memory, or a reason to look forward to winter.

If skiing or snowboarding wasn’t something you grew up doing, stepping onto a ski hill for the first time can feel like entering a world where everyone else already knows the rules.

What should you wear? Do you need to buy equipment? How do rentals work? Should you book a lesson? Where do beginners even start?

You’re not expected to arrive knowing all of that.

Rentals, beginner lessons and first-timer programs are designed to take much of the guesswork out of the experience. An instructor can help you build confidence from the very beginning, and renting equipment means you can try the sport without making a major investment upfront.

You don’t need to become a “ski person” overnight. Start with one day and see where it takes you.

There’s no single way to experience winter in Canada. Make it your own.
