Different era. Same love of purple and black. 💜🖤

Venus & Mars started out making goth and Victorian-inspired clothing, with corsets being a huge part of what we did.

Over the years our designs have evolved into more fantasy, medieval and Ren Faire pieces — but apparently we never got over dramatic layers, corsetry or purple.
Some things really don't change.

More is more. 🖤

Corsetry, velvet, lace, dramatic layers and a sweeping cloak — this is exactly the kind of styling we love.

One of our favourite things about making alternative clothing is seeing how completely different a piece can feel depending on what you pair it with.
Wear it gothic. Wear it medieval. Wear it to the Ren Faire. Or just wear it because Tuesday needed a cloak.

A little moment from the Venus & Mars archives. 🖤

This was May 2009 at our Victoria Day Gothic High Tea in New Westminster.
We held an outdoor fashion show alongside the New West Classic Car Show, with our models taking to the street in Venus & Mars designs.

Looking back at these photos brings back so many memories — the clothes, the models, the events, and all the wonderfully creative people who were part of the Venus & Mars world over the years.

We’ve been making alternative clothing since 1993, and there are more than three decades of stories like this tucked away in our archives.

It’s going to be fun sharing more of them. 🖤

A little Venus & Mars from the archives. 🖤

Rich red velvet, black contrast sleeves, a fitted lace-up bodice and those dramatic flared cuffs — this one has all the details we loved then and still love now.
Looking through the archives is a reminder that while the years (and the hairstyles 😆) may change, our love of velvet, corset-inspired shapes and a little gothic drama really hasn’t.

Ren Faire season always gets us thinking about what we want to make next. 🖤
Corsets, flowing layers, cloaks, chemises and pieces you can mix together to create your own character — this is very much where our heads are right now.

We’ve also been working on turning some of our longtime Venus & Mars designs into beginner-friendly sewing patterns, so you can make your own version at home.
We have lots of ideas, but we want to know what you want to see next.

There’s just something about velvet. 🖤

This rich w**e velvet was one of those fabrics that changed completely depending on the light — deep burgundy in the shadows and almost jewel-red where the light hit it.

A simple silhouette meant the fabric could really be the star.

We made so many pieces in velvet over the years, and it’s still one of those fabrics that immediately feels like Venus & Mars.

Velvet: forever, or only for special occasions? 🥀
