Our featured performer for our Under the Rooftops of Vancouver Erotica slam and open mic on Thursday February 26th is known in burlesque circles as Duncan Tea Bags. In poetry circles he’s the former Vancouver Poetry Slam Slammaster, current Seventeen Syllable Tiara winning Slam Champ and double century writer. I know him as captain kind, the best hugger on the planet, Duncan Shields.

Under the Rootops of Vancouvers is a night of poetry where we celebrate love, laughter and s*x. There will be free Lindor Chocolate. There will be s*xy poems. There will be silly characters, a poetry slam, a featured poet and an open mic.

Duncan Shields is a computer games animator, science fiction writer, burlesque performer, podcaster, and spoken-word poet currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia with his daughter and wife. He has a voracious appetite for movies, comics, and science fiction/fantasy novels. He’s tall, he has blue eyes, a few tattoos, he’s a libra, he enjoys the rain and he likes bland burritos.

In an effort to change things up for how the year is going for all of us, we’re bringing back Under the Rooftops of Vancouver. Come join us for a night of poems centred around love, s*x and laughter. Friends, it’s almost time for the most fun event at Word Vancouver, The Seventeen Syllable Slam!

The Seventeen Syllable Slam 2025

Saturday September 20th at 12:30PM
Robson Square

The Seventeen Syllable Slam is a literary comedy poetry competition where poets attempt to win over judges with their short poems. Each poem needs to have seventeen syllables or less (sort of like a Haiku) and there will be 16 poets in the competition, with the top four taking home cash prizes. The poems do not have to be funny, but the event certainly will be. Please expect a unicorn, bubbles, flags, and fur.
