HOMAGE opens today in the ArtSpring Gallery! Join us at the opening reception from 5pm-7pm to celebrate the arrival of these gorgeous works of art. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in their most dramatic jewelry.
This 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐭 𝟓:𝟎𝟎𝐩𝐦, join acclaimed metalsmith Donald A. Stuart and Salt Spring's own Susan Benson to celebrate the opening of 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 at ArtSpring! Put on your finest jewelry, enjoy a glass of wine, and dive into the histories of extraordinary Canadian women through stunning sculpture.
Made by Stuart and curated by Benson, Homage is a powerful exhibition of 40 tailor-made and exquisite necklaces designed and created for 40 of Canada’s most iconic women. Each necklace is displayed beside a biography and portrait of the honouree, hand-drawn by Benson, who has just been selected for a 2026 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
To capture each woman's essence in necklace form, Stuart used a wide range of colours, textures, and materials. For example, Kwanlin Dün elder and former Yukon commissioner Judy Gingell's necklace incorporates gold nuggets, moose hair, mastodon ivory, glass beads, and caribou antler to evoke the mountainous Yukon landscape against an aurora-streaked sky. For jazz legend Diana Krall, he crafted a bold collar from antique piano keys and walnut with 14K gold inlay.
Homage has toured Canada’s Eastern Provinces to rave reviews. Salt Spring is its first, and only planned, showing on the West Coast. Come see it at ArtSpring from 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟐𝐧𝐝, open from 10am to 4pm daily. Entrance by donation.
